The Secret Chord is powerful storytelling by an accomplished writer and observer. In this book Geraldine Brooks explores historical fiction via The Old Testament which comes alive with the story of David, the famous warrior kind. The story is told by the prophet Nathan who has a vision and who predicts that David will rise to great heights. In fact King David does eventually soar to great heights and establishes a kingdom in Jerusalem and brings with it peace, prosperity and many sons with several wives. However, Nathan also predicts David's downfall, for one death he will pay with four lives. This story has all the makings of a Shakespearean tragedy with a heart-breaking ending, the higher they rise, the bigger they fall. Brooks has crafted an eloquent, satisfying account that will keep the reader engaged until the end.

Got approval for this a few years back and didn’t get to read it. I’ve since read this book and loved it.
