Highly recommended read!
This one really got to me. Every page! This is a good read but it will have you emotional as well.
This book tells the story of a successful kidnapping. A woman steals a child and raises her as her own. The story shifts perspectives frequently. Typically told from both mother's and the child's POV, it also looks to people a minor as the security guard in the store as well as other major figures including the nanny and the father. Spanning over 25 years, this was a pretty good read. It moved quick and was fairly compelling.
I was not sure I could read this book. A child being kidnapped is a parent’s worst nightmare. Yet, I could not stop reading What Was Mine. It started innocently enough and then Lucy takes Mia. I had a hard time accepting Lucy’s justification. She talked herself into it being okay that she took another person’s baby just because she could not have one herself. The one thing that redeemed Lucy to me, just a little, was that she took amazing care of Mia and raised her to be a wonderful young lady. Lucy keeps Marilyn in her thoughts constantly, always thinking about the hell she must be going through in the lost of a her daughter.
While the book is not easy, I could not put it down. When I had to stop reading to go on with life I continued to think about the story. I found myself sneaking and reading just one more chapter, page, or paragraph. I liked that the paragraphs were labeled with who was telling their side of the story and that the chapters were usually short and easy to read through. It was also interesting that so many people told their story. There was no part of the story left untold.
I have to say the ending surprised me. I am not sure what I expected but that was not it. It is a satisfying ending, just not an expected ending.
I recommend checking this book out. It is not a story for everyone but it is a story that will stay with you long after you are finished reading it.
Oh my. What have I just done to myself. This was so emotional.
It’s a child that’s been kidnapped, I’ve read plots over and over until I need to take a break at times BUT THIS ONE, you kinda forget about the kidnapping.
It’s been 20 years.
The chapters are owned by several of the main characters and you just simply get inside they’re heads, their hearts their emotions.
I was bounced from pillar to post.
The biological mom
The mom who wants a baby so bad
The child grown
The finding out.
Of course I knew she committed a crime. An unforgettable unforgivable crime on a mother and family plus the child themselves.
The thing is, I could also feel for the woman who brought her up.
This story is not black and white and the ending will floor you.
An incredible story about a woman who takes a baby and raises her as her own, not to mention getting away with it for so long! I couldn't put this down!
After being engaged throughout the entire book, the ending left me incredibly unsatisfied. I didn't even particularly like any of the characters, but I wanted to listen every chance I got. Such a disappointing way to end a good experience. :(
