Unfortunately, I did not realize that this was the second book of a series. Since I had not read the previous book, I found it difficult to really get into the story and did not quite understand the characters.
I’m sure had I read the first book I would have enjoyed the second much more.

It was so fun to come back to this series. I really liked having the the POV of Ulrick and Eyelet. Ulrick was still left as quite a mystery in the last one, so it was great to finally get to explore this character and understand what was happening. I didn't remember much, just a few things, from book 1 but this one was still easy to get back in to.

And some of the reveals in this one were just surprising! I didn't try to anticipate where the story was going and just enjoyed it so I loved the ultimate reveal. Well done, another fun. It's not often I get to read steampunk so I love when I can find a good read with it!

This second book does a great job of continuing the series. No disappointment here. This fantasy series is pretty enjoyable to read.

This series is so good! It is dark and gripping and just everything that I love in a novel. I can't wait to read some more by her.

I unfortunately didn't get to finish it in time before it expired on my pc. I enjoyed reading book 1 and I hope I can get to read this book in the future. Thank you to the publisher for giving me access to this book, and if I manage to read it in the future I shall edit my review accordingly.

Actual Rating: 3.5

This was an interesting read. The story was great. I did like the fast pace, and the action. However, I did feel like the alternating points of view did take away from the characters. I did not feel the same connection to the characters as I did in book 1. I feel that made the book less relatable. The ending was good. I will continue the series to see what will happen in book 3. Overall, a great read.

This book had been in my netgalley tbr for qute some time until I finally gave in and decided it was time to continue Urlick & Eyelet’s journey. After enjoying the first book: “Lumiere”, I was really hoping to enjoy this one just as much or even more than the first one, but sadly, that wasn’t the case. I honestly had to push myself to actually continue reading and finish this book after having dropped it like two times prior this final and successful try. So, as I made my way through this book, I had this feeling that things didn’t really made any sense and that the story was kind of rushed right until the end of the book. Things also felt too dramatic for my liking, so maybe that’s why Id din’t manage to enjoy this journey as much as I hoped to.

I think that I’m getting way too used to reading books in a third-person point of view so much that reading first-person pov’s in this book didn’t felt right. But besides that, the author’s writing was fine throughout the story and it helped you have an idea of how the new places we got to visit were and how the new set of characters we get to meet worked with it.

We get to visit new and familiar places through Urlick’s and Eyelet’s journey as they tried to save each other. Some of these settings were the Madhouse Brink, the prison, the palace, etc, and they were all unique and well introduced, but not enough.

Through this second installment we get to see and meet with some already familiar characters like: CL, Cordelia, Iris and Flossie, but we mostly get to meet and interact with new ones like Masheck, Livinea, Parthena and Penelope Rapture, etc. The thing about the characters is that I really didn’t get to know them enough to actually enjoy them. Some of them felt rushed and pushed into the story without a strong base and purpose that weren’t just random distractions or unnecessary twists.

In the end, I didn’t really get to enjoy this book because I felt that the story was rushed and stopped making sense halfway through the book, and because the characters didn’t felt developed enough. I really hoped to enjoy this—even after dropping it around two times earlier back in 2017—but I sadly didn’t. Hopefully,  even though this one was not good enough, the next one will be better, Sadly, I wont know because I don’t think I’ll be continuing this series after this.

Did not finish. The characters were irritating and the story wasn't satisfying. The magic I found in the first book just wasn't present and it definitely disappointed me.
