The grieving mother. The visions. The boy whose death she could help to solve.
Charlie Cates’ little son is dead. The sad mother doesn not care very much for living these days - not until the visions start, the visions of another little boy asking for help. So when a work offer comes to compose the book about the mysterious disappearance of missing child some 32 years ago, she is willing. But coming to Louisiana estate of Evangeline is more overwhelming that she thought (and not just because of meeting Noah, man very much different from all men this NY girl has been interested in before), but because the memory (or presence) of evil is strong here. And Charlie does not know who is involved in the old case, why and how. But her visions continue.
Finally a read with fast-going plot! After so many boring "mysteries", this one is here for a full-speed read. The plots grow, vary and twist on every other page, so I have sat on the edge of my seat! The plot changes, red herrings and the reality of what truly happened is also done intelligently, kudos. Throw in the emotions, doubts and understanding - and here you have one compelling read.
I have enjoyed this book entirely.
Not being disturbed by the lack of remorse from the killer/s, I would go for 4.5 stars. But why have compassion for the killer/s and not the victims? In the content of what happened, I find this a double standard-y.
Also there is some simplification present, like that Charlie gets everyone to cooperate very easily, and the paranormal aspect is never fully elaborated.
But still, this was a memorable read. Mysteries, go this way!
