This is a wonderful first book in a cozy mystery series that grabs you from the word go. I will definitely be looking for the next instalment!
When I first started Beeline, I was thinking I had missed some previous books. There are references to Abby's previous job, a work related injury which changed her life and a former, serious relationship. Some of these events sounded like they would have been a good beginning to the series instead of where Beeline takes off. This wasn't a negative, it just made a strong impact on me, so much so that I went online to find out about those non-existent first books.
I also found this book to be very similar to another series set on a small farm, but I don't recall the name/author. Small farm, decrepit home, organic, failed relationship, much mention of chicken and eggs, former cop, etc. The story lines differ though.
There is a lot of detail, especially about Abby's work on the farm, which could be tedious for some readers. It didn't bother me though and it's nice to see some realism in a cozy where often times the character never seems to actually have to be at work.
Overall, the book kept my attention and I liked it enough to start reading the next book in the series immediately after.
I received my copy from Netgalley in exchange for my honest review.
