All books by Heather Heyford are fabulously written, and this is another wonderful addition to this series. Would recommend to everyone!
This is the 4th and final installment of the Napa wine heiress series.
I would've been fine with this series ending at the 3rd book, as this was not my favorite in the series.
Xavier St. Pierre is forced to introduce his three daughters to their half-Japanese sister, a product of one of his many affairs.
The sisters had no clue Sake even existed!
Sake has been living a less than glamorous life in San Francisco.
She has a potty-mouth, hangs out with less than desirable people and longs for the day she will see her mother again. I did not really 'buy' her relationship with Bill Diamond, the real estate broker. They just did not seem like the right 'fit'. Sake's character was definitely more 'street' than than her half-sisters and she really had a difficult time fitting into this family.
(Talk about opposite sides of the track!)
I enjoy Heather Heyford's writing, but I guess I just didn't like the character Sake.
A TASTE OF SAKE - Heather Heyford
#4 Napa Wine Heiresses
FAMILY CHICK LIT - 4 stars
Plot - 4 stars - Sake is Xavier's illegitimate daughter, recently brought back into the St. Pierre household. She's grown up street-smart, with no exposure to the high-class and expensive lifestyle where she now lives. Her mother basically left her to fend for herself, and Sake has used her skills and her brains to carve out an OK life for herself despite the poverty and other shortcomings of her surroundings.
Writing - 4 stars - In this story, Heyford built two entirely different worlds--the millionaire mansion and all its accouterments vs. Sake's world of poverty and deprivation. Both are believable and easy to read. It was fascinating to see Sake try to bridge both.
Characters - 4 stars - I had a love/hate relationship with Sake. She's a tough, street-talking young woman who has had to take care of herself most of her life. She is most comfortable in her familiar poor life, but she recognizes that there's more out there. She's used to being on her own, so it's difficult for her to accept help or advice, especially when it's given authoritively by her father. I liked her independence and dislike of charity, but it was frustrating to see her pushing away from her new circumstances and not accepting friendly overtures. Bill Diamond is a warm and loving character--capable and dependable. He seems kind of stodgy and older than he is because of his cautious manner, but he's basically just a good guy and a nice contrast to Sake's edginess.
Title - 4 stars - The title follows the style of the previous series books. Each daughter's name is a type of wine and is incorporated into the title. It sets the mood.
Cover - 3.5 stars - Colorful with warm colors, creating the mood for the California setting.
Overview - 4 stars - I really liked this book despite my initial misgivings. Heyford drew me into the story even though I didn't really like Sake at first. As her back story was revealed, I found her complicated personality made sense and grew to respect her ability to survive in difficult situations. Her love of her puppy was endearing, and it added a bit of a side story that lightened her up. I loved Bill and found him strong and solid, just what Sake needs. Having only read one other book from this series, I found it easy to pick up the details of previously-featured characters, so it's a definite stand-alone book.
