Once again Eakes writes a beautiful novel rich in relationship. Ashley Tolliver is the perfect midwife to the inhabitants of the remote Appalachian town where she grew up. Hunter McDermott is just the right juxtaposition, complimenting Ashley's character in intelligence and concern, yet bringing out the differences with his wealthy upbringing. Together they, along with the town around them, create a warm and inviting story which, although predictable at times, keeps readers engaged through the very end.
