This book describes the lives of Lila, Sam and their 2 children. Sam, a restaurant critic, is an egotistical, selfish man who wants to control the life of Lila for the sake of his anonymity. I didn’t care of the characters and couldn’t find sympathy for Lila.
Nice storyline with good characters, easy summer read I think that is enjoyable sitting around the pool on holiday.
I was attracted to the cover and title, but this book did not hold my attention. I struggled to identify with any of the characters and was hoping for more.
While this wasn't my most favorite read, I could recommend it to a number of friends or family members. As other reviewers have noted, the material was hard to get into, and I never found a natural flow. With that being said, I still found some of the content to be interesting, as well as the overall idea.
Insightful look into marriage and friendship. Lila, married to restaurant critic, Sam, realizes that she regrets giving up her career to be a stay at home mom. Lila is intelligent and likable, but I found Sam tedious and controlling, probably the point, but it didn't make for as enjoyable reading as I would've liked, That being said Elizabeth LaBan has a wonderful style and this is a poignant and thought provoking novel.
Thank you to Net Galley for the advance copy!
Unfortunately, I just could not get into this and I had to eventually put it on my did-not-finish shelf on Goodreads. I tried on multiple occasions and I couldn't push through. I appreciate the galley and I know this could work for someone else.
Don’t read this book if you are hungry. The constant description of food had my stomach speaking to me throughout the read.
I just wish I liked the book more. The premise is interesting. A family moved to Philadelphia where Sam takes his dream job as a food critic. What his wife Lila doesn’t realize is that Sam will not allow her to make friends, be seen in public or go back to work for fear that people will try to influence his reviews.
‘He won’t let her?’ Seriously? I found this to be infuriating and I nearly put the book down several times because of it. In this day and age I can’t read about men who ‘won’t let’ women do things. Thumbs down for me.
I loved this book! It brought back memories of how it is to be a mother of small children. While it is a wonderful experience, it also brings about feelings of inadequacy & tons of self-doubt. I loved reading how this mother navigated her way to happiness through trial & error!
Thank you so much for being willing to grant me access to this book. Unfortunately, life obligations have prevented me from doing so. If my schedule clears, I plan on reviewing this in the future and will post the review on Amazon and Goodreads. Thank you.
