A Fortunate Blizzard will tug at your heartstrings powerfully. It starts with Trevor getting bad news about his health. Very bad news. Trevor is going to have to make some hard decisions in the near future. It's almost Christmas and he is going to have to go home to his large, close family and break this news to them. I cried while reading this section of the story.
Marc is about to spend Christmas alone, as usual, but he isn't particularly happy about it. He works late in his law office office in Boulder and then heads home to his large, empty house in Denver.
A third main character in this story is actually the weather. A severe blizzard has moved in, trapping Marc on a stalled highway and Trevor in a cab on the way to the now closed airport. Marc is able to hike to a nearby hotel and secure one of the last available rooms. Trevor is not quite as lucky. He is dropped off at the hotel but faced with spending the night in a lobby chair.
The two men notice each other and as their stares and interest progress wind up spending the night together. What begins as a hookup of convenience and desire morphs into a wish for more. Marc sees that as a possibility. Trevor, who is facing his own mortality, realizes it's a wish that cannot be.
My heart and soul ached for both men. When Trevor finally tells Marc the truth, Marc wants to save Trevor's life but cannot. I loved Trevor and Marc. These are two of the most well-developed main characters to grace the pages of a romance novel. I also loved the secondary characters. As a mother myself I could hardly bear the pain that Trevor's mother feels. The emotions in this book are strong and will keep you glued to the pages throughout.
The end is not quite an HFN but not quite an HEA (emphasis on the E) either. It's a perfect ending, full of courage, hope and love, though, and that makes this a very satisfying story.
