Beatriz Williams is an author who I will pick up time and time again. Every time there is a release I’m lined up for it. Along the Infinite Sea was no exception and I’m excited to recommend to my friends!
As you venture down along two timelines, Beatriz Williams takes care to develop both characters in Along the Infinite Sea. There is a well defined line between both periods in history, with enough details to pull in a reader. If you are looking for a lovely weekend read, that will pass time by the lake or on a beach, don't hesitate to pick up a copy this summer.
This story is told in two separate storylines by two different women. Annabelle in Europe in the mid to late 1930's and Pepper is in American in 1966. During the summer of 1966, Pepper Schuyler finds and restores a rare, vintage Mercedes which she then sells at auction. She's planning on using the money to take care of herself and the unborn child she carries, the result of an affair with a married politician. Her family, aside from her sister Tiny, know nothing of her condition. The purchaser of the Mercedes is Annabelle Dommerich and when the two of them meet, Annabelle takes Pepper under her wing. You slowly start to learn the story of Annabelle's past...a Nazi husband, a Jewish lover and a flight from Europe at the brink of war in the very same Mercedes.
I loved the writing in this novel. Williams did an amazing job of weaving the two stories together. I think fans of Williams’ previous work will likely enjoy this book. There’s lots of little nods to those previous works that fans will surely appreciate. ALONG THE INFINITE SEA has beautiful descriptions, wonderful characters, secrets that everyone likes to hear, and amazing characters.
Beatriz Williams always excels at writing characters and stories you don't want to step away from, and Along the Infinite Sea is no exception. The 1960s isn't a time period I read about often, and I was happy to see it included in this book!
There are times when reading a book with two different time periods it can get confusing. Beatrix Williams did it perfectly. She kept the time periods separate, the stories separate yet intertwined, and did it with amazing style. I loved that Pepper had her story, the present, and Annabelle had her story, the past, yet their two stories came together perfectly. Although, I have to say that I was not exactly sure how Annabelle and Pepper actual came together. I mean Annabelle kind of kidnapped Pepper, there was no real tie between the two of them.
One thing that stuck out to me is how promiscuous the women in this story were in the past, at least in this book. The women in this book were strong, sure of themselves, and not afraid to go against the norm. No matter the situation they stayed strong and sure in the path they wanted to head. Yet, Annabelle fell in love and let her heart lead her way.
The entire story is wonderful. I could not put this historical fiction down. Page after page, chapter after chapter I found myself being pulled farther and farther into Annabelle and Pepper’s stories. I became invested in the characters. I was not just reading a book, I was living a life alongside these two amazing women.
I recommend picking up your own copy of Along the Infinite Sea.
I think this was my favorite Beatriz Williams book to date. A perfect combination of history, romance, tragedy ... I definitely shed a tear when it was over!
