Zane Clearwater’s boss, Randy, tries to talk him into stealing turtle eggs but he declines. Unfortunately, Randy blames him anyway and Zane is fired from his job at the zoo. After 18 months of sobriety, Zane hits the bottle hard and blacks out. He wakes in the morning to find his mother had died in a mobile home fire. Now it’s just him and his teenage sister, Lettie. They must make a life for themselves, but before will it hit a wall before it can start. Zane receives a text that his mother had been keeping lies. He begins questioning everything.
The book begins with a death and ends with a funeral. It has a fast pace, the characters are somewhat developed, and it is written in the third person point of view. There are aspects of Zane’s Cherokee heritage he must face or at least learn to deal with along with the fact that his father, long thought dead, was in fact, very much alive. This was a quick read and definitely an underdog story.
Thank you to NetGalley and Majestic Content Los Angeles, AuthorBuzz for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I don't usually give below 3 stars in a review. I realize the author's have usually put a lot of sweat and tears into their work, so I hate to diss anyone for effort. Yet, this story was not good enough for a 3 star. My con's for this book include unlikeable characters to a confusing mystery for everyone from reader to MC's. Zane blacks out and must try to remember what happens when his mother is killed in a fire. It was just too back woods for me with despicable and unlikeable characters. Not a one star, but now worth my time. Bonus, it was short and somewhat suspenseful.
I received a free copy from NetGalley. Life thrown into chaos by jobless, fire and death. Secrets from years past come back to haunt the main character. A few times you want to tell him, NO, don't do that but the details and truth come out in the end.
This was a fast paced read, but I had a hard time connecting and for me it was the common sense that was lacking in some situations that had me bewildered enough to be distracting. I would consider additional titles from this author and I'm grateful for the opportunity to have read this title.
This was an Action packed mystery about a family with deep secrets, struggling day to day to survive. Pretty good interesting read and it kept me guessing.
Thank you netgalley for the ARC.
It was just okay for me. I mean suspension of disbelief is one thing, but it annoys me when characters can't seem to apply the minimum of common sense to work through a situation. It wasn't terrible, but it was fairly predictable in many spots. It was an easy read and flowed fairly well, which is good since it wasn't fully engaging to me. I'd probably read any other books by Lipinski since this was a debut and hopefully she'll improve.
Twenty-six year-old recovering alcoholic, Zane Clearwater goes on a blackout drinking binge the day that he is fired from his job at the Tulsa Zoo. When he wakes up he learns that his mother has been killed by a fire set in her trailer. Thankfully, his 14-year old sister, Lettie was spared. Things go from bad to worse as Zane is identified as the main person of interest in the arson, and he can’t remember a thing.
Not long after the fire, Zane receives a text that further turns his world upside down. It seems that the story that his mother told him about his long dead father was a lie, and he may be the son of a local man with Cherokee blood that was not at all a nice character. The reason that his mother fled and hid was to try to get away from this nasty dude. This revelation stokes Zane’s curiosity and he sets out to try to find out the truth about his parentage.
The book is fast paced, and at moments, heart-pounding. I’m not going to say much more about the plot in order to avoid spoilers. I’m giving this a solid four stars for the drama of the thriller, and the characters of Zane and Lettie, who I cared about.
Thank-you to NetGalley, Majestic Content Los Angeles, and the author, Lisa Lipinski for providing a free ARC copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
A gritty crime tale that made me think about the question of blood and if and when it will eventually out. Enjoyed this tremendously.
I AM SO EMBARRASSED ... JUST NOW FINDING THIS ONE ON MY KINDLE/AMAZON. WAS NEVER READ SO NO REVIEW COMING AT THIS LATE DATE. MY SINCERE APOLOGIES. BOOK HAS BEEN ARCHIVED.
This was a realistic story about family problems and secrets. It was gritty and kept me captivated from the very first page.
Bloodlines by lynn lipinski is a mystery and thriller read.
Fired from his job at the Tulsa Zoo, 26-year-old Zane Clearwater wakes from an alcohol-and cough syrup-induced blackout to learn his mother was killed the night before in a fire in their trailer-park home. Zane has no memory of that night-could he have set the blaze? The police have a lot of questions, but so do Zane and his 14-year-old sister Lettie. When he gets a mysterious text that indicates everything his mother told him about her past was a lie, Zane embarks on a journey of discovery that results in meeting his supposedly long-dead father. Jeremiah Doom has a dangerous streak as long as the Arkansas River and a shady, secretive life. Zane may share his father's Cherokee blood, but can he battle against the anger and violence that also lurks beneath the surface of his own skin? Is Zane destined to repeat the sins of his father?
A really good read with good characters. I liked the story and the characters. 4*. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy of this book from netgalley.
Bloodlines started off promising. Zane identified his mother's body and quickly became the prime suspect in her murder. In addition, he finds out his mother wasn't who he and his sister Lettie thought she was, and his father is still alive. Unfortunately it felt like a lot of things kept happening to Zane, or didn't happen, rather than him using a bit of common sense to discover the truth. For that reason, I couldn't really connect to him as a character. In addition, Zane's distrust of the law and his wish to get to know his father led him to make some really stupid decisions that I'm not so sure a man of 26 would really make.
The side story of Emmeline and her dress making was a distraction, along with Zane's father and his dealings. Neither added much to the overall story apart from providing some background. Similarly, the treatment of Lettie by her schoolmates didn't really solidify any additional sympathy for her, especially when it was left unresolved. I think that was my main problem with this novel - it rambled on without a great deal happening . Then it was wrapped up with a nice neat bow at the end without much action or internal struggle on Zane's account. I didn't feel as connected to the characters so by the end I wouldn't have cared if Zane won or lost.
I'm not sure I'd classify it as a suspense as much as frustrating. If I could rate this 2.5 stars I would.
