Obviously I received this title long ago. Well before Yarros was pushed to the popular forefront through her dragon books and TikTok sensation. Before anyone knew who she was. And I'm so glad I got to read this prior to all the hype so there was not fear of being disappointed if it didn't live up to what she has recently written.
What I did not know when I first got this and jumped into it was that it was the third in a series. However, I was still able to read this one as a stand alone with no issues understanding anything. I'm intrigued to see how the first two stories may fit in with this one, though. It's always fun to watch the characters progressions even of background characters in books!
Give me a close proximity and friends to lovers trope any day. Especially one where the two characters just cannot resist being in each others orbits.
I really enjoyed both Sam and Grayson. They have stained pasts that hold them back from a lot of things. But together they do work through those secrets, and this makes them stronger together. And despite the struggle to come to terms with their pasts, it does not define them in the end.
There is heartbreak and ache in this story, I will not lie. Par for the course with most romantic stories. Laughter, tears, and mending will occur when you read it. And there is lots of steamy spice, as well. Yarros has a way of almost making me blush with this!
The author takes you on an emotional rollercoaster ride with this one. Of course there is drama, what would a romance story be without it. But there is emotional growth from the characters and healing, as well.
Overall, I enjoyed this and Yarros's writing. She will definitely be a go to author for me in the future.

Sam and Grayson will need to come to terms with their past, the present, and their future. If they can survive the secrets, military life, and find redemption they might have a chance. Both will test each other as they discover what matters most and find the one thing that they can't live without.
A standalone read or indulge and enjoy the series. This dual POV spicy military romance is a journey that tugs at the heart and leaves you wanting more.
