I really wanted to love this book but I can't even convince myself to like it. I usually enjoy this author's book but I found this one lacking in so many ways that I mostly skimmed through it until the end. By the hallway mark, I found myself at a loss. I couldn't connect with the characters and felt like there was no connection between the two. Cade and Shay seemed one dimensional and utterly unrelatable. I think a lot of that had to do with just having Cade's POV as a reference. I usually enjoyed getting into the MCs head but I only got Jace's and he was not that great a character to begin with.
All in all, not the book for me.
NO INTEREST IN LOVE - Cassie Mae
#2 in the All About Love romance series
GREAT CAMARADERIE - 3 stars
Plot - 3.5 stars - Jace is being represented by a junior agent, Shay, who is trying to improve her career. So when an opportunity arises for Jace to audition for a movie, they are both excited and ready to make their move. Sadly there are a multitude of unfortunate things that occur to mess them up. On the plus side, they enjoy working together to solve these problems.
Writing - 3.5 stars - Mae writes in a warm and mildly amusing way that makes me smile. Her characters are pleasant and definitely people that I'd want to hang out with. There's a little more depth to the characters and to the story that keeps me interested.
Characters - 4 stars - Jace is a totally fun main character. He was a friend and actor in Landon's movie (in Book #1), so he's getting a bit of reaction, much to his delight. He wants to reach for the stars, but the sweetest part is that he wants to succeed to make his grandma proud and buy her a house! So cute. Sure, he's been kind of a jerk until this point, but he's got a nice side that really shines through as we get to know him. Shay initially seems totally uptight and focused, but we discover her softness inside where she's insecure yet driven. She's fun when she lets herself. The camaraderie between them is cute and very entertaining.
Title - 3 stars - The title refers, I suppose, to Jace's desire to get ahead, not allowing himself to get close to women because of a bad experience in his past where he unintentionally hurt someone. And Shay is focused on her career, so she keeps herself "emotionally stunted."
Cover - 3 stars - Nothing wrong with the cover, but nothing to draw the eye either. The dark color is attractive, but doesn't stand out. Perhaps Elmo in the background or something would have livened things up, although that's probably not allowed.
Overall - 3 stars - A fun book, a nice book, but not a 4-star romance. I totally enjoyed the characters and found their backgrounds to be strong and their personalities to be very attractive and approachable. This wasn't the typical romance, nor was it even a friend-to-lovers romance. These were just two people who worked together, had a mild attraction for each other, then grew to romance from there. I had to give it 3.5 stars, though, because the relationship between Jace and Shay just didn't click for me. Although I very much enjoyed them individually, and their friendship and camaraderie was entertaining, there was absolutely no sexual tension or even hint of it for me. So this "romance" book became a funny road-trip book for me, and it was actually very put-downable. I liked it, but there was no spark.
Another adorable new adult contemporary romance by one of my favorite authors. Once again her quirky characters steal the show, making me laugh and swoon!
Sigh
Cassie Mae-well, I love you, too
This is beyond quirky and so off beat i hit me right in my heart. I think in so many way this is way more romantic than most of those so cliche romances.
REAL romance rocks!
This sweet feel good story is heartwarmingly comfortable and a romantic page turner! I loved reading and following along the characters sweet love story! I loved this book! An addictive read!
I'm sure it's a good book, but I don't like books written in first person
I love stories in the male lead’s POV. This story being written that way lets us have an insight into Jace’s motivations and feelings. His story with Shay and their friendship to love story is unique and feels genuine as a result of its ups and downs. There was also great handling of Jace’s dyslexia, an issue many deal with in quiet rather than bring attention to themselves. Great story!
