What a fascinating book. I was impressed by the storyline and the characters were all well written and complex. Where there are complex storylines combined with intriguing characters the reader experience is magnified tremendously. To have a book that is well written as well as entertaining is a delight. Reading is about escaping your world and entering another one. The word building was phenomenal in this book. Here I forgot about my own life and was immersed in the world created by the author. I would recommend this book.
Why did I wait so long to read this book?!? I LOVED the first book, but just SAT on this one and that was a MISTAKE, let me tell you!
So, the characters are just as amazing as ever, Lucy is my favorite. We have skunks here and while I would NEVER actually go near one enough to pet it, they are ADORABLE in that "I move awkwardly like I am cute prey, but will make you wish you were born without a nose should you come close to me" kind of way.
The small town Southern setting is not one I have ever lived in, but it fits what I would expect (from seeing in movies/on tv/in other books) so that was spot on.
The worst part of mysteries are the murders. I feel so bad for the victim and I really wish we had seen some sorrow by the relatives/loved ones of the victim. It felt too...sanitized or not realistic. There didn't seem to be any grieving and holding the celebration while her body was still warm seemed really...tasteless.
Other than that, it was great to see Virginia get some sort of come-uppance, though it GALLS me what she did to financially ruin Verity and I SO want Verity to get her grandmom's necklace back. What happened in this book wasn't enough to hurt Virginia, bless her little black heart.
Ellis is a dream-boat, despite who his mother is. So was Matthew and I am SO HAPPY that Josephine is happier now. Frankie is a pip and I will be sad to see him move on.
HIGHLY recommended series Folks. I am going to toddle off and get the short in-between stories and the next book NOW. 5, perfect blend of spooky and funny, stars.
My thanks to NetGalley and Season Publishing for an eARC copy of this book to read and review.
My apprehension about the success of this series is gone. I’m fully invested in the weird ghost hunting duo that is Verity and her spirit sidekick, Frankie. Verity thrives on helping those in her small town of Sugarland, Tennessee, even despite the fact that most of the town has turned their noses up at her. Meanwhile, as a realist and one who is always eager for a quick fix, Frankie can’t seem to understand why she keeps putting herself out there. They are like the odd couple and it surprisingly works better than I would have thought after reading the first book of the series, Southern Spirits.
One thing I enjoy about this book is that the author does an exceptional job at hiding the killer from the reader. I have yet to notice a distinct pattern or structure of clues that gives it away. This is impressive since I typically can guess who the culprit is before reaching the halfway mark.
As Verity seeks out to uncover the truth behind a murder in the local library, she also finds herself being pursued by her slimy ex-fiance, Beau. This is an awkward situation considering their past: she left him at the alter after discovering he hit on her younger sister the night before their wedding and his family took her for all she was worth in retribution for her humiliation of him during their reception. Considering that Verity is barely surviving, it’s a slap in the face when Beau begins trying to woo her. It’s even more awkward considering the fact that she may or may not be dating his older brother, Ellis.
The thing I enjoy most about this series is the fact that each story offers new characters and depth to the world of Sugarland, Tennessee. The author is doing a great job at creating a world that is intriguing and engaging for readers. I know a lot of people struggled with the first book, but I would highly recommend that other fans of cozy mysteries give this series a chance if you haven’t already. It’s definitely a keeper!
With newly discovered abilities Verity Long finds herself amidst a murder in the local library. Her ghostly sidekick, Frankie doesn't think Verity should be involved in solving said murder. But Ellis has managed to get Verity tangled up in the mystery. Verity is a bright, spunky soul despite her unfortunate circumstances as the social outcast. No thanks to her ex's mother. Oh and not to mention her finances are spiraling out of control.
Love Verity's journey and thoroughly enjoy reading the Southern Ghost Hunter Mysteries. The characters are fun, witty and relatively upbeat despite circumstances.
Verity is still adjusting to her status as social pariah and her new abilities as a Ghost Whisperer. It doesn't help that the Matriarch of the Social Elite, who just happens to be her ex-fiancé's mother, has made it her personal mission to ruin Verity. Fun times! Verity does have her sister, a few friends which include ghosts, a pet skunk and a budding relationship with one hot deputy sheriff, who just happens to be the brother of her ex. What more could a girl ask for...maybe a steady paycheck? Sugarland is preparing for their annual historical celebration which promises to be the biggest social event of the year. They will not let the murder of one of their own put a damper on the festivities. Verity, with the help of her ghost friends, wants to find out who killed her friend. Can she find out who the killer is before they strike again?
Verity has not let her current financial situation get her down. She is one spunky character with a good sense of humor. Frankie is one cantankerous ghost, but he is a big help when it comes to Verity's investigations. What an interesting cast of characters the author has created! It had me at times laughing out loud and other times on the edge of my seat. I can't wait to see what mystery Verity has to solve next. I would definitely recommend this book and the series.
It is a second book that in this series and I loved it. I just couldn't put this book down, it was that funny and entertaining. The mystery was well developed and there were few plot twists, that I didn't expected at all and, of course, I didn't have a clue what a real murderer was.
All interaction with paranormal realm only gave this book more charm. I loooved it! Great book for a cozy evening.
I have read a good chunk of Angie Fox’s Demon Slayer series and really enjoyed reading the first book in the Southern Ghost Hunter series, Southern Spirits. So, you can imagine my excitement when I found the second book in the series on netgalley! I requested a copy and dove right in. I received a free copy in exchange for an honest review.
And, I honestly loved it! Ms. Fox has written a heroine who is funny, endearing, and relatable. I loved getting to know everyone a little better in the second book. Verity, Frankie the German (her ghost side kick), hottie hero-in-the-making Ellis, as well as the other secondary characters are all back and up to their small-town hi-jinks. I loved seeing the relationships develop and grow, not just the one between Verity and Ellis, but also between Verity and Frankie. The dynamics between Ellis and Beau, as well as Verity and Virginia were also full of fireworks and tension! I loved the mystery, the ending, and all the steps along the way. Though, admittedly, the villain in this book was easy to spot.
Just like the first book, I consider this book to be urban fantasy because the paranormal and mystery elements far outweigh the romance, though it does leave things open for more romance in the future. In general, it is well written, funny, fast paced, and an awesome installment in this series. I can happily recommend it to others and look forward to returning to Sugarland, TN soon!

I have no idea why this book was in NetGalley but as soon as I saw it I clicked “Request” and I kept coming back every hour to see if I had been approved.
I was really entertained by the first book that I needed to see what happens next.
Verity’s reputation is still not good, but is not as bad as it was. Ellis is now figuring out he wants something long with Verity and they don’t know how to start it, since well, he is her ex-fiancé’s brother. At the same time, a murder occurs and it affects not only Verity but also her sister.
With the help of super sidekick Frankie and some other new ghosts and also Ellis, Verity manages to once again get almost killed a dozen times, unearth centuries long secrets, catch a killer, and give us pretty steamy kisses with Ellis…sigh…
This book was full action, intrigue, suspense and I kept turning the page like a deranged woman.
I love Lucy, I want a skunk….can’t wait to see what happens next.
This series never seems to fail! Verity Long has tapped into some previously unknown ghost seeing abilities when she accidentally binds the spirit of 1920s gangster, Frankie, to her house, they seem to find themselves in deadly predicaments with life and death cases to solve.
This book is the second installment in her Southern Ghost Hunter series and I received this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. I stumbled across book 4 previously, and read that one first. I'm pleased to say that they books can be read alone and/or out of order though there are often small references to previous books, nothing that will impact the outcome of the story you're reading, or give away any spoilers.
Every book of Angie Fox's that I read, makes me want to jump in my car and head straight for Sugarland, just so I could visit! Off to go buy the next one.....
