I really enjoyed this graphic novel. I liked the Jem cartoon as a kid and this did the show justice. It's fun, the characters look great and there's diversity.
When I heard Jem was returning, I screamed inside. And possibly outside. This series was such a hit with me in its animated (and doll form) when I was a child. It has stuck with me, and I was super happy to hear that it was getting a new comic series. Kelly Thompson and Sophie Campbell do amazing things with the lore around Jem and the Holograms and update them in a great way for the new decade, while keeping true to the spirit of the characters and their music!
A really fun, representative update of an 80's nostalgia staple! It does what the movie failed to do, bring the characters and their issues in to the 2010's. I liked that there were lesbian main characters, characters of color and the friendship between the girls was so positively portrayed, a major positive when it comes to recommending it to younger girls. And the artwork is absolutely out of this world! All the pastels and swirling colors were gorgeous and each girl was distinctively drawn in her own style. Better consumed in trade versus single issues (in my opinion), as the story doesn't seem quite as cohesive when broken apart -- it actually seems very wandering & directionless. Overall, highly recommended! :D
