I don't know if I just expected too much or something different. It really lays out slow, relatively, and it's not clear what's important to know or not. I felt sad over things that happened, but mostly just blah. I will say this reads like an episode of a crime drama, but from the beginning it's like you were dropped into Season 2. I did like that the later parts of the book gave a few answers, but I spent much of the story lost in the why this was all happening.
Unfortunately, even with three attempts made to read it I could not get passed the first 25 pages and finish this book.
Brother was a unique thrill ride. I was glued until the end. If you like thrillers with twists & turns, this is the book for you!
The pacing was excellent, and I was rooting for the main character.
I highly recommend this book!
When a book starts out with a woman screaming you know there has to be something interesting among the pages.
This is a story about an extremely messed up family living in the mountains in West Virginia and they are really your stereotypical backwoods scary family. The story is told from Michaels point of view with the occasional flashbacks into their childhood.
You find out real quick that Michael was stolen from his family as a young kid and raised in this very strange family. He has come to think of Ray and Misty as his siblings because he doesn't really know any different. Ray is the oldest (though we do learn about an older female sibling that is no longer there) and Ray is really messed up and you find out through the flashback why he hates Michael.
Their mamma has a thing for doing not so nice things to females and it's Ray and Michaels job to go find her a victim and if they don't do it then Misty always ends up hurt.
Ray invites Michael to go with him to town which surprises Michael and they end up at this store where Ray has a lady friend and leaves Michael out front on his own with the other lady who is in the store. Michael has no idea how to talk to a woman because he hasn't been exposed to anyone but his momma and sister. What is he going to talk about, oh hey my family just likes to kill women, yeah I am sure that would go over. :)
I don't want to say a whole lot more but there is a build up to why Ray wants Michael to come to the store with him and it leads to the ending that is kind of a your basic horror ending. You finish it and you set there staring at your book going did that really just happen and then you have to think and decide if it was a good ending or not...lol.
As messed up as this family was they were really interesting characters. I must say I really liked Michael and felt really bad for him because he was taken, then put through all the crazy and nasty stuff he had to do being with these people. Ray hated him so much and was so bad. The author makes you almost feel a bit sorry for Ray, but then you decide nope he needs to die! Misty really didn't have a lot of character development because she was more of a background character but you couldn't help but feel really sorry for her being in that situation.
I know I keep saying it but this was one crazy messed up family but I kind of enjoyed reading about them! It was a pretty fast paced read and if you like horror give it a try!
There was much to enjoy here, but I found I couldn't connect with it. I'd read more from this author in the future though.
One of the best books that I have read all year! Imagine a book written from s very different perspective. One that I have never read before. Imagine a slasher novel, but the perspective is not one of the victims...but you feel for them and I absolutely loved it! This book is as devastating as it is horrific! If I could give it 10*'s I totally would! I'm afraid to say much, because this is one of those stories, where I felt that discovery of what is going on was one of the amazing parts of this story. If you haven't read this, you must!
I tried multiple times to get into this book. I love thrillers, mysteries, suspense, and messed up serial killer minds. But Brother just didn't hold my attention. The premise of it was great and it had a lot of positive feedback from readers on GoodReads. This book was just not one for me, I guess.
This was such an amazingly macabre story. I need more!
The story mainly follows a young man named Michael, who is part of this unusual family, but just doesn't really quite fit in. I mean, who likes to hear screams of bloody murder at night?. Not me, and definitely not him. However, the rest of the family isn't really all on the same level. They are all completely unstable. One minute no emotion, and the next totally unhinged. Each character has a role that they play and are dependent upon each other. I mean, a lot of the crimes they've committed and all of the close calls that were nothing more than close calls were all because of Michael. As well as everything that led up to Michael and everything that came after.
There were a few things that didn't make sense at first. The whole story had this one big puzzle, but in order to solve it, you had to figure out the smaller ones. Like a scene was written for the sole purpose of showing how little things could set off the characters' erratic behaviors. It's like walking on eggshells. Or going through a field, hoping not to set any bombs off.
I feel like this story was a bit to short. Like maybe add more perspectives to how things occurred and a little more backdrop on certain characters that I believe made a huge impact on the story. Like Momma Claudine, for instance. She was a victim, but then became something worse. I consider her my favorite character.
I read this in one sitting and think it's too short!.
I absolutely love the ending. So original and beautiful and tragic and soul-crushing.
The month of October is nearly here. I think of fires, full moons, scary movies, and gore. Brother is gruesome with a twisted family that participates in vicious acts. Michael was kidnapped from his birth family and brought to live with the Morrows. He was too young to know that the family they were "welcoming him into" would seal his fate and what he would become. I found myself having hope for Michael and also screaming in urgency for him to stand up for himself. He found his strength, but by then was it too late? This novel is dark and twisted and I loved every word of it. Brother is a great book to read if you're wanting dark, gruesome reads on your October to-read list. There are ulterior motives, vindictive characters, and people out for blood. This is my first Ania read, but I'll be sure to grab her others.
Sorry, this book was just too much weird for me. The description sounded interesting and I tried but just couldn't get through it.
This is one of the best horror novels I have read in a while.
So creepy! I couldn't help but feel a twinge of sympathy for the main character, despite the obviously horrible things he has done. The author does a great job of creating a character you want to root for, and I was really interested in seeing where the story went -- not at all where I expected. Well done.
