I didn't pick this one up until I read and thoroughly enjoyed The Midnight Library. Not the easiest of reading as I lost my Mum quite recently but was still an enjoyable and touching story.
This was my first Matt Dunn book and whilst I didn't love it. I didn't hate it either. We follow Joshua peters a 36 year old man that has returned to his family home of Derton to help his mother and father after his father's diagnosis of terminal lung cancer. Josh left Derton as he hated so much about it growing up and now he's back he's reliving some memories that's he's not keen on but also realising that it's not as bad as it seemed when he was a teenager. This book tried too hard to be funny but just failed and I lost count of how many times I rolled my eyes.
I related to this story because I grew up in a town such as this and my eyes see it differently after the many years I have been gone. This story was heartwarming, sad, funny in spots, and thought provoking.
Many thanks to Lake Union Publishing and to NetGalley for providing me with a galley in exchange for my honest opinion.
What a great story, "chic lit" for men (and women).
Filled with laughs, sadness, tears, good characters and a really good storyline. I loved this story.
For ages I read the book thinking this was a woman's very bad take on writing from a male perspective, but then I checked and Matt Dunn is very much a man. Shocker.
Nothing happens and the writing is dull and the pointless scenes goes on and on. Now I can see it's hugely popular so I don't want to dis anybody's taste, it's just not mine, at all, at all.
