Unfortunately I decided not to finish this book after reading the first chapter. With pioneer novels such as this, I'm often a bit uncomfortable with how Native Americans are treated and talked about. In the first chapter there is many references to Indians, which as a woman seeking to be educated I felt Jennie should know the proper name for their tribe. There was also several descriptions to the Native Americas she saw as having "disfigured" or "strangely sloped heads," which I felt was borderline racist - even though I do understand the need sometimes for historical accuracy, I just felt a bit uncomfortable reading on and knew I would probably encounter more such instances. I can only hope Jennie does educate herself in the rest of the novel, and I also hope that some of these moments were taken out of the published novel.
