I received this free eARC novel from NetGalley. This is my honest review.
This has been on my TBR pile for so long, and I'm glad I finally got around to it. I really enjoyed the storyline and seeing the characters change throughout the story was a great character development. The plot was great and kept my attention. I'm glad I got the chance to read this and will be on the lookout for more in the future!
Starflight by Melissa Landers
What an entertaining and addictive space opera! The characters are so well developed and fully fleshed out, which I feel doesn't happen as often in sci-fi books as it does in other genres. Solara is an amazing main character, and I found myself pulling for her and invested in her story very early on. I loved that she's tough and independent, but also softer and more sensitive at times. Her backstory is heartbreaking and endeared her to me even more. Doran really annoyed me at first, with his holier-than-thou attitude. He was so spoiled and entitled! But then he starts to change, and I love a character who can grow throughout a story. The romance between these two is very sweet, and I love watching them grow from friends to more. I loved the team of secondary characters in Starflight. Captain was my favorite, but I grew attached to several of them.
The action was nonstop! I loved all the twists and revelations and exciting moments. The writing is fantastic, and flows so nicely that I was tearing through the pages with ease. All in all, I loved it.
This is a fun, fast-paced, romantic read--with space pirates! What's not to love? 2019 Current Beehive nominee.
This was one of those reads where I felt my age. The book was fine, and I'm sure my teens would enjoy it, but the story, the characters, the plot all felt pretty familiar to me. After reading hundreds and hundreds (thousands?) of genre titles, it's not an uncommon situation for me to find myself in. Fortunately, that's not the case for my patrons!
Solara is attempting to indenture herself out as a servant for passage to the Fringe for a new job, but to her luck, the only persona willing to hire a convict is Doran, a spoiled rich boy who was her biggest competitor when she was at school and is only interested in humiliating her. But when an unexpected hiccup occurs in Solara's well laid out plans, she has to improvise...even if that means tasing Doran, causing him lose his memory and having them both catch a ride on an unregistered junker ship while being pursued by the law.
This review will be a little bit short because I feel like I would just fan girl the entire time, and nobody wants that...well, maybe some people want that, but I will attempt to keep it at a minimum. I am absolutely in love with this book! This is probably the best story I have read recently and I have no idea why I put it off for so long. It had been on my wishlist, but I just kept pushing past it to read other things that seemed more important at the time. Well, I am ever so glad that I finally read this book and now I wish I had a physical copy to hug lovingly to my chest.
The best way to classify this book would be to call it a teen version (with a few adults thrown in the mix) of the cult classic show Firefly, full of space pirates, smugglers, all different kinds of people creating new worlds, technology meets the old west in flare, crazy scary bounty hunters, enforcers, romance, betrayal, lies, duels for a wife, charming kleptomaniacs, mischief and mayhem galore...oh and a sugar bear named Acorn. Everything about this book spoke to me and I wanted the adventure to continue when I reached the end.
This is the first in a series, with the next book narrated by different crew members on the Banshee, which I am excited to get the mysterious backstory from Kane and Cassia, but on the other hand I love Doran and Solara and I am concerned book 2 can't live up to the high standards that this book generated. This is a must read for any space adventure fans, teen scifi fans and anyone who misses Firefly.
As a side note, I listened to the audiobook version and it was spectacular! The narrator was spot on on all the character's personalities and voices and I highly recommend the audio version for those interested.

SUCH a cute novel! I loved the enemy-to-lover trope used and the redemption arc for Doran! I loved each of the character's growth and how Landers also hinted at other backstories for different characters! Such a fun sci-fi novel!
This is a fine teen, sci-fi, outer space, love story, but the characters didn't grab me.
Solara longs for a fresh start, but the convict tattoos on her hands limit her choices. Armed with gloves, she becomes an indentured servant to gain passage on the spaceliner Zenith.
The problem is that the person she becomes indentured to is a former classmate, a rich rude jerk named Doran Spaulding, who decides to break the contract and leave Solara stranded.
A twist of fate lands them both with the Banshee, a ship of fugitives. When Doran is framed for a crime, he will have to work with Solara and the crew of the Banshee in order to survive.
Fun space opera! LOVED THIS!
