I’ve been a fan of Belinda Bauer for a while now, but this is my favorite novel by her so far. She takes what could be a rather common premise to a whole new level!
I highly recommend this novel to all readers who enjoy character-driven mysteries or thrillers. Also to those who like their crime fiction spiced with a little humour.
I dearly hope that this is not the last we’ll see of DCI Marvel.
What if...the psychic powers are true? I mean, yeah. But what IF?
Detective John Marvel is not a nice person. But he is a good cop. And he is very keen of solving the disappearance of 12-year-old Edie, almost to the borderline of obsesssion.
So when his boss puts him to investigate a lost...dog, he is not happy at all. No sir. But it is a way to have something on his superintendent to use for the future, so he agrees. But this seemingly small investigation will lead him on and on, into meeting with Anna Buck, a young mother who lost her son 4 months ago. And in her pain...maybe she is able to understanbd. And to see more than she knows.
Anna Buck is bordering on crazy. Daniel left the house through the open door and then...no one knows. She can't live normally from that moment. Her marriage is verging on the point of breaking down and so is her mind. So no one is shocked more than her when she starts to have the visions about the other missing child.
This one is quirky, interesting, a bit of dark read with the twist of unknown powers (I would not call this paranormal or supernatural, some powers are on the game, but no questions asked about their origin or reasoning for them. They are just here, like an unbelievable gift).
I enjoyed the ride...until the almost end, when the novel lost a bit of steam. But still, one of the most interesting read of this fall and the authoress to follow!
Kudos for the un-traditional hero. Yeah, he is not a nice guy. But when in trouble, I would want to have him on my side.
So I hope this is not his one and only case, but that there would be a sequel.
