I am afraid I was not able to finish this book and my review would not be positive so I am happy to keep it private and not share on my website.
There was much to enjoy here, but I found I couldn't connect with it. I'd read more from this author in the future though.
This is a beautiful collection of short fiction. It feels like Maine, reads like Maine. Sometimes you read a book and wish you'd written it. This is one of those times. It is deep, insightful and powerful.
As a self-proclaimed short story aficionado, this collection - Goodnight, Beautiful Women - immediately piqued my interest. I love a good book set in Maine, and this interconnected set of short stories is a solid edition to that category. This is a dark, uncomfortable set of stories that examines the choices women have made, and their consequences.
Unfortunately I was unable to read this book before my copy expired, Since I can't review it I will give it an average of 3 stars so as not to affect its rating. I'm very sorry about this and thanks for the opportunity to read the novel!
This collection started out innocuously enough with the first three stoic, elegant stories, but Noyes woke me out of my peaceful short-story slumber with "Drawing Blood." I was hooked on her seemingly clear and bright prose; Noyes does pull her punches, but in a manner calculated to leave the reader to fill in the blanks, and these self-drawn conclusions were often startling. Her stories are almost like little games you're playing for the first time, figuring out the rules as you go. Standouts include "Glow Baby," "Goodnight, Beautiful Women," and "This Is Who She Was."
