Vampires seem to be both the stuff of nightmares and also conversely the dreams of many. I enjoy a good paranormal story so have read quite a few involving Vampires but admit they can often seem banal and lacking in originality . I spotted this book which introduces the world of the Dresden Vampires and decided to discover for myself just how the Hunter and her prey became entangled.
Elaina is a tracker for District 5 and actually she's pretty good at what she does but prejudice keeps getting in her way. Believing all Vampires are evil Elaina gets a shock when her work puts Vicq in her crosshairs. Vicq is no longer aligned with Dresden, nor is he a killer because Vicq is a coven leader trying to save his race. Soon Elaina has questions but the answers are not going to be what she expects.
It's always difficult setting up a new world that's both believable and different. I unfortunately didn't feel pulled into this story although I was quite interested in Elaina. I'd have liked more of her background but it's really a simple introduction to the rest of the series. Vicq whilst heroic and romantic just felt too stylized to this reader. A hunk that spouts poetic words in Spanish but the romance was so quick truthfully it left me cold. What is intriguing though is District 5 and the secrets they hide and I'm pretty much expecting evil scientists trying to perfect the ultimate soldier or something. This has a cliffhanger ending though so you have been warned
