This is the sequel to The Vault of Dreamers. Like the first, it's a decent young adult dystopian thriller mixed with sci-fi. I read the first one years ago and had to refresh my memory, but I think I liked it better than I liked this one. I don't think I'll continue the series.
I enjoyed The Vault of Dreamers (even though the ending was a major let-down and kind of confusing for me) and was eager to continue with The Rule of Mirrors, so when I saw the review copy pop up on Netgalley I jumped on it immediately. The Rule of Mirrors is fast-paced and exciting, and all the things I look for in a sci-fi novel. The science part of the story is fascinating. Luckily, things pick up right where we left off at that confusing ending and we learn exactly what's going on with Rosie. There's essentially two of them. One of them knows about the other, whereas the other one... doesn't know about the other one. lol. Ok, it's still a bit confusing to talk about. But Caragh does a great job keeping things straight in the mind of the reader, which I appreciated. I will say that I never love a pregnancy angle in books like this, so that wasn't great for me. I also didn't really like Rosie (the actual Rosie). She's not nice, and I have to like my characters to really enjoy a book. The ending was insane! So good! It wasn't exactly a cliffhanger, but quite the hook to get me to come back for the last book.
Admittedly, I had forgotten most of the first book--only remembering enough to know that I hated it. I was feeling generous when I picked up this book, to be honest. It felt like a step up from THE VAULT OF DREAMERS. It was weird, certainly, but it was also... really unique, I guess? I liked the characters a bit more, and although I still felt there wasn't much of a voice, it didn't bother me as much as it did in the first instalment!
The second book in The Vault of Dreamers starts from the cliffhanger of sorts O’Brien left off with, though I personally think The Vault of Dreamers should've been left alone as a stand alone. This sequel might be a little disorienting at first, as Rosa is in another body and it takes awhile to figure out what was going on.
