I received a free copy from NetGalley. One where the side story is as interesting as the main mystery, the pages just keep turning.
Chief Dove Carnahan is the chief of police and in this small country town in Pennsylvania most of the policing is minor bumps and bruises, but one day a body of a young girl is found and the whole town is turned upside down.
This book was such a great mix of small town people drama and mystery that was engaging from page one. I read this in one day and it was just the right length and pacing for a great mystery thriller with a side of drama!
Dove Carnahan was a fun woman to follow through this story. Her history with this town and the way she approached the investigation was entertaining. I loved the dynamics of Dove and the people of this town - the dueling families and how they all wove together was just great. For me there were a few pages where I had to reread to make sure I had everyone's family relationships and love relationships all straight!
Published back in 2016, I am frustrated with myself that I just now read it and even more sad that the author hasn't written a novel since. I want more from this author!
Chief of Police Dove Carhanan is a fifty-something woman who is employed in Campbell’s Run, Philadelphia, the town where she grew up. When Dove is called to the crime scene of a teenage girl who had been badly burned and buried in a sinkhole, she had no idea how much this case would impact her life. In her role as Police Chief, Dove was no stranger to murder, but this one hit a little too close to home, ultimately reminding her of her challenging childhood. Coincidentally, while Dove is investigating the young girl’s death, she learns that her mother’s killer has been released from prison, after serving thirty-five years. As Dove’s investigation uncovers skeletons in the young victim’s family’s closet, she also must finally face some family secrets long buried from her own childhood. This novel is a mystery that explores the family dynamic and how childhood experiences can shape adult lives.
My apologies to the author and publisher for this very late review. I actually reviewed this book months ago but it never saved to my account :/
Anywho, I'll start by saying this was a much different read than Back Roads. I felt like the storyline of Angels Burning is a bit played out. I sadly lost interest rather quickly. Also, there was too much going on at once for Ms Dove. Reliving her past both through the release of her mother's killer and flashbacks brought on by the death of the Truly girl...it was too busy for my taste.
I enjoyed reading this mystery set in Rural Pennsylvania. A young girl has been murdered in the small town and the local Police Chief a local sets out to solve the crime. The central mystery and a family murder from the past all center around family secrets. It is those secrets that seem to damage both the Chief's Family and the family of the murdered girl. The author does a very good job with small town setting and the characters. The mystery was good and all the mysteries do get solved. The real focus of the book though is the setting and characters.
I truly enjoy this book, it kept me reading till the end. I would certainly be reading more of this amazing author. I suggest you read it, you will certainly won’t be disappointed. I usually don't read this type of books, but I read the summary and got very interested. Thank you for the opportunity I will look forward for more from this author.
