Last True Hero had a blurb that grabbed me and a military hero plus it was a book by a new to me author. All systems go.
Dare Conners is home after years of combat duty as an Army Ranger. He struggles with the night terrors and his memories, but he is ready for a new start. His Army buddy invites him to join him in a seaside Carolina town to help him rest and sooth his soul. Dare was a foster kid and never has found home and isn’t sure he plans to stay, but his first encounter with sultry and standoffish Berkley makes him reconsider.
Berkley brushed off Dare stating she doesn’t date military guys and her life is complicated. Recently home from college, her father the Admiral and her mother have her life all mapped out- marry a Navy man and be the perfect Navy wife. Berk loves her parents and she likes the guy her parents have picked, but she doesn’t love him and she definitely doesn’t want to be a Naval officer’s wife like her mother. She has no idea what she wants, but her eyes drift to the dark and hot Dare who comes to her restaurant and won’t give up on her.
Alright, so I started reading and enjoyed Dare’s narration and early story right away. If his story would have been paired with someone else, we wouldn’t be here now with me giving reasons why I called it quits. I actually knew the moment I got Berkley’s narration that I wasn’t going to like her, but I gave her a chance. I’ve had characters change my mind after rough starts. My first impression was a whiny girl who couldn’t figure out what she wanted and played games with people. Six chapters later, my impression didn’t change. Berkley knew what she didn’t want even though she couldn’t seem to articulate to the people who needed to hear it. She had a really nice guy propose marriage and she knows she can only be friends, but she doesn’t make a clean break and chooses to string him along not to hurt him. She has another really nice guy, Dare, into her, but she is coy, flirts and plays hard to get, brushes him off a few times, but keeps running back to him giving off mixed signals and acting like he’s her dirty little bad boy secret. Sigh…
So yeah… done with the games. I liked both the guys she was dinking around with their feelings and I didn’t like her so I’m calling this one at chapter six.
I received a copy of this book from Net Galley in exchange for an honest review.
