This is my first book by K.N. Smith and it does not disappoint. I finished this book back in 2015 and it was an enjoyable read for sure. The plot was well-written, and the characters had pretty distinctive characteristics so everything was intriguing and captivating. I loved how fast-paced and action-packed this story was and would like to read more similar novels in the paranormal fiction genre in the future.
***Thanks to the author for providing me with an e-copy via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.***
Two Petals Publishing and NetGalley provided me with an electronic copy of The Urban Boys: Discovery of the Five Senses. This is my honest opinion of the book.
Five boys are exposed to a foreign energy source that gives them heightened senses. When they use their special gifts, it helps them to discover evil and gives them the power to defeat it. With many challenges along the way, will the 5 be able to protect and help their neighbors and friends?
In a lot of ways, The Urban Boys reads more like a treatment for a new television show than a book. The author takes so much time in describing the people and the setting, but, in this case, more is not necessarily a good thing. The book gets bogged down in the unnecessary details and never recovers its footing. In the author's zeal to create a community with a cross section of the entirety of our diverse population on Earth, the realism is stolen right out of the book. The likelihood that each family type, as well as ethnic variations, would be brought together in this ragtag group just does not seem all that realistic. I had issues with the sentence structure and writing format, as the combination of short phrases, small sentences, and long, rambling ones ruined the overall flow. For these reasons, I would not recommend The Urban Boys to other readers.
