It was cute but not my cup of tea.
I don’t know why I expected something more adult.
Not the books fault!
Cool art tho!
(I’m a moody reader, sorry)
Growing up, my mother sent me to sleepaway camp every summer for six excruciating years so I relate to Skye's desire to survive this unique camp. I truly enjoyed this graphic novel by Steven T. Seagle (in the interests of disclosure, we're professional colleagues and friends). Jason Adam Katzenstein's artwork, therefore, is the real revelation here and the work, page design, color, and artwork is just a delight.
My camp was filled with people from Long Island's five towns region where everyone knew one another so I, like SKye, was the outsider trying to fit in. She does a far better job of it than I did, with much more humorous results. Unlike Skye, I never met any ghosts, but had my share of early romance.
If today's middle grade readers are like I was, they will find this a tremendously fun read.
I am sorry for the inconvenience but I don’t have the time to read this anymore and have lost interest in the concept. I believe that it would benefit your book more if I did not skim your book and write a rushed review. Again, I am sorry for the inconvenience.
A well-written and enjoyable book, I am glad I requested this title and will be more than happy to pass the title along to my fellow library purchasers.
Skye was going to spend the summer with her Dad and step-monster, but instead they send her off to summer camp. Caring parents as they are, she ends up on the wrong bus and is forced to spend her holidays in Camp Midnight, a summer camp of the paranormal variety.
While this is certainly a middle-grade graphic novel I wanted to read it as Steven T Seagle was involved with Big Hero 6, an animation movie that took me completely by surprise and ended up on my all time favorites. I also enjoyed Camp Midnight a lot, and while marketed to a younger audience, I'm quite confident it is not meant to scare even them. The art worked really well with it.
My only problem with it was that the ending felt a bit rushed, but of course it is difficult to put too much story in a limited number of pages.
Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for providing me with a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!
A fun story of friendship. Quirky characters. Delightful illustrations full of dark and scary monsters. I recommend.
'Camp Midnight' by Steven T. Seagle with art by Jason Katzenstein is a story about how summer camp can be a nightmare. I really liked this story.
Skye lives with her mom and spends time with her dad and his new wife. This summer instead of spending time with her dad, she is being sent off to summer camp. When a bus mix-up gets her on the wrong bus, she finds herself at a very different camp. For one, the camp day starts after the sun has gone down. For another, the other campers look normal at first , but then things change. She soon finds herself surrounded by monsters. But along the way, Skye finds a way to make it work out. She meets a friend, gets good advice from a camp counselor, and other things happen.
I found the premise fun and the lessons learned along the way by Skye were really good. The art is kind of frenetic and I wasn't sure if I liked it at first, but it goes well enough with the story and the kind of jump out at you nature of the story. This is a fun one for young readers and tell a great story about triumphing as an outsider.
I received a review copy of this graphic novel from Image Comics, Diamond Book Distributors, and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this graphic novel.
