The early to mid ninties seem tame compared to the non stop news cycle and constant connectedness of today. This story is modern, a tale right before the world at your fingertips and it was possible to be so connected with your family and a quiet, summer cabin, it was possible for your life to be there, with them and nothing else. Moving, quiet and deeply reflective of how families come together and break apart, how split second decisions can have long, lingering impacts, still capable of forgiveness.

This is slow at times but it's an interesting and valuable portrait of a young man struggling with a variety of challenges as his family moves around itself and him. I especially liked this for the Canadian viewpoint and the insight into 1995 Quebec. I initially found it hard to get into the characters, especially since there isn't a lot of action, but ultimately read it for Jim. Thanks to Netgalley for the DRC.
