In some instances this book is predictable. The story does get a bit flat in the middle but apart from that it is a decent read. Maybe it was become I was such a fan of the book Room. It a quick and easy read that is mildly entertaining, but it didn’t have that certain something for me.
This book reminded me more of Room than Gone Girl or Girl on the Train. There weren't a lot of mind-blowing reveals. It was more about how Lily and her loved ones cope after she escapes. The identity of her captor was quite disturbing but sadly realistic, especially nowadays.
Baby Doll was a well-written debut by Hollie Overton but left me wanting more. I would have liked to read more about Lily's time in captivity rather than focusing so much on the aftermath. I also felt like someone who had experienced so much trauma would have had more issues than what was portrayed.
Overall it was a decent read but it wasn't what I thought it would be based on the premise. Though it didn't work for me, don't let my review discourage you from reading it if it sounds like something you would like, because I've also seen some great reviews on this one.
I read this book so long ago I don't remember reading it. I gave it four stars, though I didn't write a review that I can find.
Baby Doll by Hollie Overton was a well written psychological thriller about the traumas one young high school twin girl endured while being held captive against her will for eight long years. It was very hard to put down once I began reading. Hollie Overton was able to convey, in a very believable way, the effects the abduction had on both the victim and her family. There were twists and turns that I did not expect and kept me wanting to read more. I was approved by Netgalley and the publisher to read Baby Doll a long time ago. Embarrassingly, it took me until now to actually read it. Shame on me. I really enjoyed Baby Doll and am so glad that I finally got around to reading it. I highly recommend it. Thank you Netgalley, Hollie Overton and the publisher for allowing me to read Baby Doll. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
WOW! This is a really good book! There are all kinds of twists and turns and you just keep wondering how this is all going to turn out. You really feel for the characters and everything they go through and you really want to just beat the tar out of the bad guy. Definitely a psychological THRILLER!! Hollie Overton is definitly going on my list as an author to watch because she NAILED this one!

No. Just No!
This book was just PAINFUL to read. Had I not been reviewing it for Netgalley, I would have abandoned it. I felt like I was reading an overacted tv show partnered with writing that was all over the place. I pushed myself to read it in one day so that it would be done with. I could go on, but don't think it is necessary.
Baby Doll had me hooked from the start and I could not put it down! I loved having 4 different points of view in the book although I think it would have been nice to have Wes included as another "outsider" perspective.. I actually liked Rick's parts almost the best because you could really feel just how twisted and creepy he was. The book was fast paced and great for anyone that likes a suspenseful novel.
Thank you to NetGalley for the opportunity to read an advanced reader copy in exchange for my honest review!
This book is centered around Lily, who was abducted as a teen.
This book had a very good plot and characters were likable.
The authors writing style was very appealing.
I enjoyed the characters in the book, and the plot line held my attention. It seemed very similar to the true story of Elizabeth Smart who was also held captive as a teenager. It is not a book I would share with my middle schoolers because of the sexual content.
I was given this book for my honest review.
After being held captive in a small basement prison for 8 years Lily and her daughter Sky manage to escape one day and flee to their family. Over the course of the book we learn how they cope and how their family cope
The story started out great and the first few chapters were really exciting as Lily and her daughter made their escape. However after the first few chapters I found the story dragged a bit and wasn't the thrilling novel I was expecting
this book sounded very interesting and i kept saving it for when i was in the mood for a thriller. sadly, it fell flat for me. i did enjoy some parts but overall it never really gripped me. sorry.
I don't know about "most tense thriller you will read this year," but this was a pretty great read. I couldn't stop reading, even though there was a lack of suspense throughout. The ending, although not unexpected, was very good.
This book is a dark read. If you don't like this kind of story then please choose another. The story is just too good to be marred.
Lily has been through a large amount of trauma in her life. Yet she only has eyes for what's best for her daughter. When she sees a chance to escape the torture she would have to endure she takes it, no matter the consequences.
The story that ensues gives you an inside look at what not only the survivors have to deal with, but what Lily has to endure as well. It's not an easy road trying to reclaim the life that was taken from her. She has to realize that people have moved on and that things are not as they were eight years ago.
A beautifully dark story.
This was one of my first books that I've read with kidnapping as the main premise. I enjoyed overall plot of this book but I had a hard time connecting with the main character. I did enjoy the different POVs in this book.

This is one of those books where I really wish we had a 1/2 star option, because this is a solid 3 1/2 star book. To start with, I generally liked the characters (though I never felt too attached to them) andparticularly liked Lily and her twin sister because, as an identical twin, I would probably do the same thing and feel the same way if my sister was abducted by some monster including the twist ending, which I found spectacular. I also really loved having the perspective of the abductor and just adored his calculating and manipulative ways in a love-to-hate way. I didn't really mind the book mainly focusing on the reintegration of society because I kind of like those books and I kind of figured this would be what I deem "thriller chick-lit" so nothing too terribly awful would be described in the book.
Now for what made me not rate this higher: the characters being very much just characters. I really wish that this wasn't written so impartially, because I never felt a connection with any of our narrators sans the whole "yeah, I'd probably do the same". I feel like the mother's whole perspective could be cut because it's a bunch of will-they-or-won't-they and truly adds nothing to the plot and Sky didn't have much to add to the book and was not even really a character so much as a background decoration, but I guess if you want to see the perspective of a child born in captivity then you would just read Room by Emma Donahue. Also, for a woman who was locked up, tortured, and raped for eight years Lily seems WAY too adjusted to be overly believable. Would I recommend this book? Sure, but only if you really enjoyed the second half of Room and like reading about reintegration and family matters.
The book felt like one of those Lifetime movie. I have desperately been wanting to read Baby Doll since it came out last year, I would like to thank Netgalley for giving me the opportunity to read Baby Doll, I really enjoyed it.
Incredibly thought out plot and story, and fantastic writing. The first few chapters I flew threw loving it-then-however; just thought the middle was a little drawn out. The best part for me was the courtroom scene.
I want to thank Hollie Overton and Redhook Books for the opportunity to review this book.
