Thoroughly enjoyable fictionalised account of Jake Hamon, known as The Oil King of Oklahoma, and his long-time mistress Clara. Set against the backdrop of 1920s America, it’s a fascinating tale of scandal, sex, politics, ambition and ultimately murder. I’d never heard of the case before and found it a gripping read. The book is well-researched and keeps to the facts as known, but is written as a novel, which, although it relies heavily on dialogue to move the narrative along, manages to feel authentic all the way through. The overlap between fact and fiction is well-handled and it really is an excellent read.
