I was so tempted to keep skipping "A house full of daughters" because, having been sent a copy in 2016 (sorry!!) I couldn't muster the interest. How foolish was I. Nicholson has not only written a biography of her family, she has also examined the sometimes fraught relationship between mother and daughter. I am glad I finally read this book.
I'm not usually a reader of memoirs, but having been a frequent visitor to Sissinghurst, found this to be an interesting look at the Sackville-West family. Starting with the author's great great grandmother Pepita, a famous Spanish dancer born in 1830, this takes us through seven generations to the present day. Beautifully written, this is a fascinating glimpse into a family's history.
Thank you to the publisher for a review copy.
A house Full of Daughters was fascinating - but about a 100 pages too long. I found Nicholson's depiction of her (in)famous grandmother and great-grandmother very interesting, but as the book moved into the present day (and closer to Nicholson's own story) it seemed more self-indulgent and I really lost interest.
The story spans countries and generations, but the common threads were clearly drawn out and interesting - it just went on too long!
