I'm giving this a 2 star but to be completely honest, I didn't finish it. The story was just dragging on so long that it honestly took me months to get to 40 something percent. I think the premise of the story is really cool and for that I'll give it an okay rating but I have no motivation or intention to finish this. Another downside (in addition to the pacing), is that the story tends to side with typical YA cliches which could get a bit tiring after a while...
I've been very much intrigued and excited to read this book after reading the synopsis. Diving in this book gives me nostalgia back in the days when I marathon dystopian books. The chosen one trope in this book makes me want to read other books with the same trope again. Something about this book keeps me going up until the very end. The phasing is not that bad as well. However... I've read 363 pages but I feel like nothing happened. Leonie's grief, or so the author say, is too out of place. Her character is just annoying. Especially her internal monologue of how weak she is but she don't want to die so she will pretend to be strong but whines at the same time.
Not really sure if I will read the next book, but I think it's an okay book. But not a very strong first book. Maybe because there are too many books with the same plot that it does not have any qualities that made it stand out.
Wow! I've always loved fairy tales. What a beautiful and fantastic idea of a magical realm.
The World, the characters and the BIG love. I really love Leonie Woodville. She strong, brave and incredible girl. And I really enjoyed this adventure though the first chapter wasn't great. I didn't get the wow factor until I was further into the book.
Great debut! I need my answers though, I won't be happy until I read the finale and know if my favorite characters will be fine forever and ever... Now I can't wait till the second book! I really want to read more about this, and I hope that the second book has a better romance then here.
Thank you for ARC <3
I didn't actually finish this book. Boring, bad editing...no thanks
First let me start by saying I think the cover of this book is great. The story unfortunately less so.
Leonie Woodville wants to live an unremarkable life… Ok who would ever want this? If people like Leonie exist I certainly have never met them. Unfortunately for Leonie she learns she’s a Pulsar, a phenomenally powerful member of a magical species called the Chosen (except of course she doesn’t actually have any powers yet, or at least any that she can control). The Chosen live separate from us regular earthlings and have things called Kytaens (shapeshifters basically, but also slaves).
The blurb of this book promises a lot more than this book actually manages to deliver. Leonie never even manages to get to the main city she’s heading for. Instead most of the story takes place at a temple that she visits before getting to the city. Korren, Leonie’s kytaen is a far more interesting character. Perhaps this is due in part to the fact that Leonie comes off as whiny and immature, but whatever it is I was disappointed by this book.
This story had some premise and engagement to it I'll admit. But apart from the one "secret" that I was insistent on finishing the book to find out what it was... It just fell flat for me.
As did Leonie. She was the worst teenager ever. I understand she had a bad childhood blah blah but she's horrible to everyone and really pessimistic. Now this might be someone else's ideal character but I prefer my characters to have a little oomph to them and grow a little back bone.
Personally I just think this was too young for me. The writing wasn't that bad though although slightly repetitive sometimes and didn't really give the reader chance to find things out themselves as opposed to telling them every obvious thing.
