Rocked By Love is another action packed installment to Christine Warren's Gargoyles series. Filled with strong women and protective gargoyles, ... I mean sexy men! Here with pit an ubergeek with a hunky, protective gargoyle and sparks fly.
I'll start with the ubergeek, our heroine, Kylie. Kylie was difficult to like. I found her confusing and hard to understand. She spoke with this combination of Yiddish and English which was very convoluted and even poor Dag had trouble with her. Some people might find her cute and quirky but I'm with Dag on this one. It took me about two-thirds of the book to get used to her and her figure of speech during which time, I was equal parts frustrated and irritated. Aside from her speech though, she was also very pigheaded. Granted she was thrown in the deep end into the world of gargoyles and evil demons but her attitude did not make it easy on her, Dag or myself as a reader. I wanted to shake her for the better part of the book to get the eff over herself. If she had adjusted her attitude sooner, things would have gone a lot smoother for her and for Dag.
"“You mean, I should just lie back and think of England,” she said, sighing. “Oh, hell no!” Wynn scoffed. “I’m much more an advocate of sitting up and riding him like a cowgirl. I just mean that maybe if you just stopped fighting quite so hard and stopped trying to make everything make sense, things might fall into place without your help..."
And yeah, she got pretty horrible along the way...
"...but she knew she didn’t like the person she’d been on and off for the last couple of days."
And when she finally figured it all out, I was ready to stand up and cheer. I was so tired of her pity party by then.
"“I’m done whining,” she announced, finding the edge of a pectoral muscle and tracing the curving line beneath the cotton covering. “I just thought you deserved to know that. And I should thank you for putting up with it. For that and for just now. What you said was really sweet. And you’re right. I’m a pretty lovable person, so I should get over myself and move on.”"
As for Dag, well, he's just a big ol' hunk of sexy, lovable, protective and possessive, isn't he? Dag starts off resisting his attraction to Kylie. They both do... resist each other, that is. But when he finally (it doesn't take him long) realises that Kylie is his mate, his acceptance and his subsequent actions are beautiful. I wanted to hug the big lug. His feelings for Kylie were so profound and so pure, it made me kinda sappy.
"Now, he believed that perhaps he had been summoned for this purpose, for this woman, to exist wholly and solely for her. It hit him like a revelation, and it felt like a blessing."
The story really picked up for me when Kees, Spar and Knox show up. It was great to see the gang back together and growing with the addition of Dag. Of course, they still have the evil Order to defeat and things are going to hell in a handbasket but dang, it sure is fun to see them all together planning and kicking butt. I'm even more excited to see that there will be more gargoyles to come as the series continues.
BTW, Ms Warren? That whole thing with the bad guy at the end? Oy! I did not see that coming. I'm all "what the eff??" and I bet Ms Warren is sitting back going "heh, heh, heh" and laughing at my stunned expression. I mean, how could you??? ... though I totally get how that builds into the overall story arc, but ARGH!
I love gargoyles so I'm enjoying this series tremendously. It's building to something big happening towards the end and I am looking forward to each book as it gets there.
