I’m very familiar with the work of JR Ward having read the Black Dagger Brotherhood, and with this new series The Bourbon Kings she is proving again why she’s an auto buy for me. We are plunged back into the world of old money, family machinations, politics, and bourbon in this second installment of the series. It was slower paced than the first novel, but I was still engaged in the plot and the characters. The family saga continues to build around each of the Bradford family members. The patriarch, a devious man, is dead and his family is left to reflect on all the good and terrible ways he affected each of them. It was easy to fall into the southern the charm, the backstabbing, the mystery, and the overall messiness of the soap opera drama. Would definitely recommend to anyone who loves messy family sagas or JR Wards writing.
Romance with family drama, romance, gin, bourbon, whore man/woman. It was OK, for a romance book. Not my cup of romance.,
Thank you for the opportunity to read and review The Angels' Share. I was unable to get into the first book in the series and decided not to try to continue with the remainder of the books. I will not be reviewing this title at this time, but if I decide to give it another go in the future, I will do so then.
As I finished Bourbon Kings, book one of this series, I had so many questions. There were so many characters that I wanted to know more about. When I picked up The Angel’s Share I was hoping and praying that this would be Edward’s time to share his story. While there was a lot about Edward there was also a lot about the other characters that I had grown to care about. Lane and Lizzie were able to have their relationship grow, Gin is still being interesting, and Max is still mysterious.
J.R. Ward has such a way with words that I didn’t always realize how long I had read. I sat down to read a chapter or two and ended up reading for over an hour because I was so into the story. The descriptions of the characters made them seem so realistic to me that I was in the rooms they were in, I was invested in the issues they were dealing with, and I was hoping for happy endings for them all. I am not sure that I have ever seen a more dysfunctional family yet they are a family I would love to be a part of.
The Bourbon Kings Series is phenomenal. I am already pulled into this series and anxious for the next book to be released. The Bradford family is wonderful, the southern setting is breathtaking, and the story is magnificent.
Am I able to take a character from the book and make him mine? Not asking for a friend at all. I totally asking for me! Samuel T. is smokin’ and I love him and Gin. While I love the other characters together; it’s them that I’m rooting for!
I loved it. Loved it, loved it, loved it. Once again we’re pulled into the worked of the Bradford Bourbon Kings, but this time their patriarch is dead. At first it was thought to be suicide until his finger is found buried on the grounds of the grand family estate. Then, it starts to look more like murder. But who would murder William Baldwine?
Lane Baldwine thinks he has an idea and it’s one he’s not to happy to have and not one that he’s going to share. He came back to Easterly when his momma, Miss Aurora was sick and he had no intention of staying. That was until he saw his Lizzie again and he knew he had to get her back. Get her back he did and he wanted nothing more than to leave with her. Until he learned that the Bradford Bourbon Company was in trouble, his father all but bankrupting the company. Lane brought his good friend Jeff down from Manhattan to follow the numbers and it didn’t take Jeff long to realize that someone has been embezzling from BBC and Lane decides to take the problem on himself. There is no way that Lane is letting the company that has been in his family for generation go belly up. He just doesn’t know how he’s going to turn it around.
If anyone can turn the company around, Lane thinks it’s his older brother Edward. Yet after their father arranged for his kidnapping and declined to paid the ransom all but leaving Edward for dead, Edward wants nothing to do with the family or the company. All Edward wants is to be left alone with his horses. Yet Edward feels a pull toward his siblings that won’t be denied. He also feels a pull toward Sutton Smythe, BBC’s number one competitor and the woman that Edward has been in love with half his life. Though there is nothing more Edward wants than Sutton, he knows that the shell of the man he is now is not what Sutton needs in her life and he can do nothing more than let her go.
In the meantime, Lane and Edward’s sister Gin (short for Virginia) has hopped on the money train that is Richard Pford. Gin has nothing if not an enormous sense of self-preservation and she’s never in her life had to support herself. Yet she starts to question whether she’s made the right decision with Richard when she gets advice from an unlikely source. She also realizes that though she’s been a terrible mother to her daughter, it is never too late to change that. Gin was just about unbearable in The Bourbon Kings, but in this book there was a slight turnaround as if she could be someone that her daughter and her brothers could be proud of.
As if there wasn’t enough drama, the middle son Maxwell shows up. It’s not clear where he’s been or why he’s there. He heard about his father’s death of course, but he seemed to be gone for so long, it’s a wonder that he showed up at all. There really wasn’t too much about Max, so I imagine that we will be seeing him in future books.
So yes, I loved this book because I loved the drama. The alternating points of view, which drive me batshit in the BDB series, work wonderfully in this series. The soap opera-esque way that this series has will draw you in so if you don’t want to be obsessed, don’t bother reading The Bourbon King series.
Rating: 4 out of 5.
I am a huge fan of JR. I started reading The Black Dagger Brotherhood series and I must say I haven't read anything I really don't enjoy from her. The Angels Share was the next book in the series and there were a ton of twists that I never saw coming. The characters in the book draw you in and it makes the story better. Alpha females and males in a must and she delivers.
The family saga in he series focuses on the individual member. When a member of the family, who pretty much runs everything passes away, and I'm totally okay with it...on;y in the book world... There were many question how this happen. Did he take his own life, did someone kill him? JR Ward takes us into the lives of each of the family members by looking at how their father affected who they were and who they turned out toe be. Each of the brothers looks at themselves differently as well as the what could have happens.
I loved them looking at themselves through their own eyes and knowing that they are not perfect. This one things made me want to continue reading the book and watch them grow into the men they are. There are things that i don't like about each of them but it doesn't stop me from wanted to get to know them.
JR Ward does an excellent job in writing and I would love to see more paranormal books and contemporary work from her!!
J.R.’s writing was superb as always but I found myself struggling with this 2nd installment in The Bourbon Kings series. I skimmed a lot (which I hate doing). Maybe too much time had passed from when I’d read the first novel. Despite all of that, I gasped from shock several times while seeking the answers Lane is searching for. The hits continued to the end and for that I give this installment 3 stars.
And now for the continuing saga of the Bradford Family....
I can just see this being made in to an evening soap opera or perhaps a telenovella in the future because it just flows like one of those epic train-wrecks that we see on those shows. The last book ended on a bit of a surprise note with secrets being exposed and a family undergoing a major change.
The patriarch of the family is dead and has left chaos in his wake by virtue of stealing millions of dollars from his kids along with the Bradford Bourbon holdings. He's also left behind a scandal in the form of a pregnant soon-to-be-ex-wife of his son. Lane finally has the love of his life by his side but is now having to hold together his family in order to right the wrongs perpetrated by his father. He's strong but how much can one man take on his shoulders?
There are a lot of twists and turns in this one but I think you'll enjoy the ride. We have the pieces coming together for Lane... Gin's life falling apart around her both of her own making and just in general as she realizes how big of a mess she's in.... Sutton finally having to face that even though she loves someone she has to let go (Nope nope nope want her and him together)... Edward finally seeming to understand his life and perhaps show some growth... Samuel T was such a broken man and I loved seeing his inner battle more...
In general there are so many story-lines that are playing out during various points of the book that I really felt like I was watching a TV show and as much as I'd like to say that I hated it... well... I'd be lying because...
You just can't look away... I need more more more...
This has:

William Baldwine’s death has left a path of destruction, deception, and secrets in the wake. The Baldwine siblings are struggling with the financial status as new revelations surface in regards to the financial liberties their father made with their funds. Lane is doing his best to keep the family business afloat. A task that gets harder and harder with each passing moment.
With Jeff taking the helm in regards to finances and checking out the status of the books, Lane is hoping against all odds Jeff will discover a hidden windfall. Edward is surrounded with his own torment. Taking on the role of the protector that he wore so well during his youth. With nothing but pain skimming his life, Edward is hoping to save the family with his own type of protection.

The biggest surprise for the family is probably the return of their brother Max. This lone sibling has been off the grid and no one quite knew where to find him. The Angels’ Share is quite the addition to the Bourbon Kings Series. It is riddled with secrets that threaten the very core of the Baldwine legacy.
