The book had a very strong beginning and I found myself really sucked into the plot. The mystery kept me reading but the characters needed more development, they felt very one-dimensional. The book loses steam by the final chapters which was disappointing since it could've had a strong finish that tied everything together. I did like the writing style and would check out more from McIsaac. Posted on Amazon.
I'm trying to catch up on books I read while I was sick and forgot or simply didn't get around to posting. My apologies for both the vagueness of these as well as the tardiness.
The thoughts about this book that popped up when I read the description to refresh my memory are ones of disappointment. Not major disappointment, not the kind that makes me wish I hadn't read the book, but the subtle kind that leaves you almost satisfied, tantalizingly close, but not quite there. I seem to remember, for me, a pacing problem. When I expected things to get more tense and speed up a bit (or get more hectic if at the same pace) they seemed to slow.
I thought this story was fun, but was confused by the ending. I wish the characters were more flushed out and that there was so more background on each of them.
A very plausible story that kept me engaged throughout. That ending!
Many thanks to Thomas & Mercer and to NetGalley for providing me with a galley in exchange for my honest opinion.
There was much to enjoy here, but I found I couldn't connect with it. I'd read more from this author in the future though.
Thank you to Thomas and Mercer and Netgalley for a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I found this book to be ok. The premise of the story is that there is a virus that will give you the same symptoms as schizophrenia. The main character Clare Campbell is forced to return to her hometown after her parents are murdered. She is left to take care of her older brother who has been admitted to the psychiatric hospital with his mental illness. Clare soon learns the secret behind her parents murder's and she and her brother may be the solution to the world's problems.
I found the story overall to be interesting but really had higher expectations for this story. It seemed to be a story told before, a disease is going to wipe out the world and our MC must save it. Well written book with decent characters yet just not exciting.
This book started off great but then it slowed its pace and I had a difficult time reading further. Although I love these types of books, this one was not for me.
A very engaging read with an even more engaging plot line. A must read for mystery-thriller buffs. Loved it.
I didn't really like it. I felt like a lot of the prose was more tell-not-show which felt a bit clumsy with a strange start/stop pacing. In addition, Clare is very selfish and unlikable so her actions end up feeling a bit out of character. In addition, she feels too lucky, with too many good connections and so she contravenes too many emergency procedures and my suspension of belief suffered. I was also perturbed by the open implications the overall plot opens-some of which are a bit offensive given our society's existing attitudes towards the mentally ill.
