This is the first novel in Upton Sinclair's Lanny Budd series (comprising 11 books, in the end).
An excellent, substantial historical fiction novel, which focuses on the life of the son of an American arms dealer during World War I (it ends in 1919).
Through his character's experiences, Sinclair offers his own analysis and impression of the War and also the Treaty of Versailles and end of the war - it's unvarnished, often sharp, and always interesting.
A substantial, satisfying read. The first in a long series that I very much look forward to reading. Recommended.
