A long-serving police officer has to navigate the fine lines between procedure, politics and press to get the the bottom of the mystery. Ticks all the boxes. Once you get your head around the confusingly similar character names, then wade through the setting up of the pitch and all of the players in the game. Six Four is an attention-grabbing read in more ways than one
This was very interesting and demands a bit more from the reader than the run of the mill crime thriller, as there are a lot of facts and politics to keep track of, and the author does not hold your hand!
This is a Japanese crime modern classic by an author who was previously an investigative journalist which I think shows in the straightforward writing. I'm not sure how much of this was in the translation however.
It's pretty dark - the original case we focus on is the kidnapping of a child in 1989, the ransom was paid, but the child was killed anyway. Yikes. Then in 2003 we pick back up the investigation of the case by a detective who also has a recently missing daughter.
I did like it - if you want a bit more of a unique crime book then I think this is a good bet.
I thought from what I read about this book that it would be just up my street but instead when I did read it I found it too heavy going to be enjoyable. I did finish it but not sure why it was catigorised as a thriller but then I’m not sure which genre I would file it under.
slow building crime story, that is not for every reader, but i really enjoyed it!
this is not a thriller. at least not how the wester world writes and expect thrillers.
Its defiantly crime, but most of all its a slow building story that the readers has to be patient with to see where the plot, characters and the author is going to take the story to be completely thrilled by it.
I loved it!
I loved the way it was written, how the translator did its job -wonderfully by the way and that is not as easily done as one expects since i have read a lot of translations and at least half of them are not done well, so nicely done!- i loved how the author build the story up and just in genreal this was exactly what i love in the slower crime books!
For me its defiantly wroth a read and a recommendation for everyone that loves crime book that take a bit and don't need action and thrills right away.
An intense novel of high stakes. However, the tension of the novel is a bit undercut by the heavy burden of all the bureaucratic detail.
