Nandu is a strong character who has to overcome both age and race discrimination. This book provides interesting insight into the culture and life in Nepal. I think this will be a book to consider to provide our list with an international flair. I wasn’t sure which genre to categorize under I went with realistic.

An exploration not only of childhood in another time and culture, but of childhood in a culture where poverty is the norm, where society is on the cusp of great change which will in the long run mean great improvements for everyday living but in the short term may mean the end of everything familiar. It's about violence, environment, religion, and various forms of respect. Its a book that children can read and appreciate on a surface level while teens and even adults can appreciate in ever increasing levels of complexity. A great book club selection.
