"Then I'm walking in Memphis
Walking with my feet ten feet off of Beale
Walking in Memphis
But do I really feel the way I feel?"
Another charming mystery (or a couple of them) by the witty authoress Mary Ellis.
Nicki Price is head over heels about being luckily in love, so she brushes off her best friend's request to come to Memphis to help him. And even if she regrets this slip of tongue immediately and flies there immediately, too, it is too late. Danny is found dead, with the marks of beating and of injection.
So had a former choir boy entered the darker pathways? Nicki is sure the answer is no. So she and her boss and cousin Nate start to sleuth - accompanied by the Ice Queen a.k.a Isabelle Andre, the Nate's school love. But she might not be what her facade indicates...
And there is also the charming historical mystery of hidden diamonds
This novel has something for everybody. Love stories for romantics (yay for the ultimate hunk Hunter Galen), the Carlton diamonds mystery for the lovers of cozy and the death of a sax player for those enjoying the modern crime. Throw in some stalking and you have a charming mix that works together. I would prefer one big darker motif, to be honest (a personal preference), but the authoress's intelligence and wit enables this set of plots rolling, and even offering some food for thought.
And now I am off to read the third installment in this series!
As a lifelong Southern girl who enjoys romantic suspense, I am loving Mary Ellis’ Secrets of the South Mysteries. Even better is the fact that “What Happened on Beale Street” mostly takes place in Memphis, the city with which I am most familiar. I have visited many of the places in this book so it was an especially fun read for me.
I can say that Mary Ellis can definitely construct a mystery that is difficult for me to solve ahead of time. She can really drop some red herrings and take her readers through some convoluted twists and turns along the way. The story has just the right blend of suspense, romance, and humor with a subtle touch of faith. There were a few laugh-out-loud moments that helped to ease the tension at just the right times. I loved meeting new characters as well as catching up with those from earlier books in the series.
If you are a fan of Southern mysteries, or just a mystery fan, I can almost guarantee you will love “What Happened on Beale Street”. Be sure to pick up a copy soon.
Fun cozy mystery with an overall serious theme. Nicki Price is back with her cousin Nate investigating a disappearance turned murder in Memphis. The victim is a childhood friend that they both loved but didn't know as much about as they thought.
This book has a secondary plot line that goes into the history of the Carlton Hotel that is interesting and doesn't take away from the main storyline.
I enjoyed the book and look forward to reading books three and four in the series.
I received a copy of this book to facilitate my review.
Nicki and Nate have three mysteries to solve as they deal with the life-threatening along with the romance. I adored the Southern setting. The author brings Memphis to life and includes a little history just for fun. It made for an interesting mix and a fast paced story that kept me engrossed right up to the last page!
