This novel started out wonderfully - I found myself engaged by the various characters and wanted to know more about their backgrounds, relationships, etc. Unfortunately, I thought it fell a little flat after about the first quarter and I struggled with some of the actions of the characters. The atmospheric setting of Jamaica was fantastic, though, and I'm sure this will work well for others!

A book packed with difficult topics but told with grace and intelligence, I like what the author did with this novel.
The characters are splendid, strong, and proud women.
Overall I enjoyed this read.

The author wrote an interesting story about mother-daughter relationships and sexual identity in Here Comes the Sun. I thought the ending was underdeveloped. Overall, the focus on beauty standards and fractured familial relationships and personal identities.

Excellent debut by young Jamaican lesbian writer. A different side of Jamaica than the one most Americans see and hear about. Recommended. Look forward to her future work.

There were definite elements of this book that I enjoyed but some parts of this book were hard for me to read because as a Jamaican native myself, I kept comparing the fiction with my own experiences. I enjoyed the rich descriptions and engaging characters but hated the negative light in which several aspects of this novel cast my beloved homeland, Jamaica. I wish there had been a good character, someone who resembles me or the good people I know, to add some diversity to this novel.
