Actor Flanery’s first novel suffers from an incredibly slow plot, which never truly gains momentum. An extreme amount of gratuitous profanity makes this book impossible to recommend for the inspirational audience. The ending is heartwarming, but most of the tale is plodding and dull.
Growing up in mid-1970s Texas, Mickey’s life is full of ups and downs. His grandfather’s sage words and advice help him to make decent choices, but Mickey’s attention is mostly focused on Jane, the girl who moves in next door. Over the years, Mickey pursues his life and admires Jane from afar, sending her undeliverable letters that get returned. It’s only after he reaches adulthood and gets perspective that Mickey realizes the impact Jane has had on his entire life.
