First published in 1975, this is the first novel in Becker's Far East Trilogy.
Set in late-1940s China, the novel has an interesting premise - a disgraced marine making his way in post-WW2 China, engaged in some sketchy endeavours. The novel does a good job of evoking the time and place (a period of history I'm quite interested in). Sure, some of it might seem a bit dated, but it's a pretty good read.
Looking forward to reading the other two novels (also available via Open Road Media).
