Historical novels are usually a hit or miss for me. THE FORBIDDEN ORCHID was a unique novel, however, and I found myself quite enjoying it! The main character, Elodie, was likable and reading from her point of view was great!

This beautifully written historical fiction novel completely immerses the reader in the life of an orchid plant hunter and the distress of his family during his time away from them. The details of the treacherous trip to China, the dangers of traveling in China, the ruthlessness of other plant hunters, and the heartwrenching treatment of girls during this historical era are offset by the love story interleaved throughout. I would totally recommend this novel to others.

While I wouldn't necessarily consider this book realistic, it was a fascinating page turner that kept me on the edge of my seat! The main character's romantic relationship was easily my favorite part.
