As Ullrich's debut book, Fortunate Sum is a great read and a excellent predictor of her (hopefully) long career in lesfic. The story revolves around Catherine, a brilliant, goal-oriented financial adviser who has one last item on her checklist for success, and Imogene, a free-spirited, spontaneous entrepeneur. After a chance encounter with a psychic, Catherine sets of to conquer her last goal - to be married by 30, and ends up taking Imogene on as a client to help her sort out her finances including a small inheritance. This is an opposites attract type of situation and the two characters have a good chemistry that works very well. It takes a bit for the book to find its footing - but by the halfway mark, you will be completely invested in the story.
This is a great romance between the leads that has a really nice build up of attraction that leads into some very good sex scenes. Imogene shines in this book. She's an absolutely lovely person that anyone would be drawn to. You can't help but connect with her and at times wonder what the hell she sees in the stodgy Catherine. Catherine, as the buttoned up financial adviser, is a bit harder to warm up to - which is kind of the point. She's focused on her career and goals and can't seem to see what's right in front of her. She comes around - eventually. There's a nice bit of tension built up as the characters hit some obstacles (drat those exes) and Catherine is a bit of a bonehead, but love conquers all (this is a romance).
I also really enjoyed the secondary characters. They were really well developed and helped round out the main characters as well as inserting some humour.
As a whole, I enjoyed this one.
