I have some pretty mixed feelings about this book. I must say that I enjoyed the first book in this series much more than this one. I really liked some parts of the but was bored or confused during other sections. I liked Jace and Ski and thought that they were great characters with excellent chemistry. I really wish that the focus of the book would have just stayed with them instead of being spread across so many characters. My main issue with this story is that there are just too many characters to keep track of which made the book hard to follow at times. I listened to the audiobook and thought that Johanna Parker did a good job with the story.
I received a digital review copy of this book from Kensington Books and borrowed a copy of the audiobook from my local library.
I love Shelly Laurenston and I'm a huge fan of her Pride, Pack, and Badger series. I wish I could say that I loved this in the same way, but it just missed the mark. Don't get me wrong, this was an okay read and worth the time, just not as enjoyable as some of her other books. The author sets a high bar.
Recommended, but you don't have to rush out and read this one right away.
Fun from start to finish. I can never get enough of this author and her characters.
I've been a fan of Shelly Laurenston's for a long time and her Call of Crows series has only turned me into an even bigger fan! I completely loved The Unleashing, it was so new, exciting, and different from all of the other books with gods that I've read and I was very much looking forward to The Undoing. I knew it was going to be amazeballs and Ms. Laurenston did not disappoint! I positively loved The Undoing and had such a wonderful find reading it.
I didn't love Ski quite as much as I loved Vig or even Jace, but I still loved the guy. Ski is charming and he can be a people person when he wants or needs to be, but he's not much different than Jace in some aspects. He's just as smart, logical, and quiet as her. He's sweet and thoughtful and you don't have to question that he has a thing for Jace and it's not going away. Ski is so protective and is always trying to take care of her - it was sweet and cute and it's a big part of what makes him wonderful and makes me love him and I know you will love him too!
It's been awhile since I read The Unleashing, so I couldn't really remember Jace, but that didn't matter because I absolutely loved her! She's always trying to go find places to hide where she can just be by herself and read - totally my kind of girl! She's funny without trying to be, she's smart and logical and a little oblivious at times, but in an endearing way. It's not hard to see why everyone loves Jace - she's quiet, but she's loyal and true and real. Jace is amazing and I adored her!
The Undoing, much like the first book, was not a book that I read fast and was done with in a matter of hours because there is so much meat to it, but it still felt fast-paced. Everything moved along, there was never a dull moment or one where I wished I was further along and could get to the ending quicker. I loved every minute of reading and I never wanted it to end. The Undoing was funny, exciting, action-packed, sexy, and addictive. I wholeheartedly loved it and I can't wait to read the next book!
The Undoing is the second book in the Call of Crows series and you can read it as a standalone, although it might be easier to follow if you read it after the first book. It's told from multiple points of view and Jace and Ski do get their happy ending.
Although I mostly enjoyed The Undoing, I didn't love this installment as much as some other of Laurenston's books. Laurenston always delivers on strong female characters, and giving her readers a female berserker definitely fit, but the story as a whole just didn't grip me like I expected. This was a good read, just not one I will revisit later or think about fondly down the road. But I am still moving forward with the next book.

Jacinda "Jace" Berisha is the quite one of the Los Angeles Crow Clan. She's not like the other girls, who seem to thrive on chaos, makeup and talking. Constant talking...
Jace has never told them how she ended up dead and became the Berserker Crow. But they will soon find out all about her, when her ex-husband, false prophet and cult-leader is released from jail and on a mission to get her back. Jace now has a new relationship though.
Danski "Ski" Eriksen, the second in command of The Protectors, finds Jace fascinating. She's unlike the other crows. She's quite, introspective and extremely smart. When the Protectors procure a lot of books that had gone missing and are very powerful, they discover they can't read them as they are in Russian, among many other languages they can't speak. It takes a bit of work, but eventually Jace agrees to help them translate and decipher which books are important and which aren't. Over time Ski's brothers in the clan also fall under Jace's particular charm. Along with Lev, her puppy.
When the clans realize that Gullveig wasn't stopped from coming over in the last battle, they must band together, under Kera's leadership as the "War General" to push Gullveig out of this realm. At the same time the crows have to contend with Jace's ex-husband, Braddock, and his followers... as well as the anger from her very powerful grandmother.
I really enjoyed this one, much more than the the first book. I think it's because I now know all the characters and players, of which there a many. It's like watching a television show with many characters, like a hospital show. I think in the first book I was so confused by so many characters, it was hard for me to lock in on anything other than trying to keep them straight. Now that I know them I like them and think they are fun to read about. I'm more sure of who they are and what they represent. I can't wait to read the next book. Though I have to now read something for work purposes and have to put this series aside for a bit.
This is also the reason I don't like series much anymore since you have to wait for the author to keep writing them. Yes, I have the next book in the series, but I want to keep reading until there are no more. Because now I'm invested and want to know more about all of the. The waiting makes me crazy. I really want to read more about Annalisa. We are finally getting Erin in the next book, who has a fascinating personality. But Annalisa is also very interesting to me.
I would also like to know about Tessa and her family and who her husband is and why he never questions her. Sure he doesn't know who or what she is, but he doesn't seem to mind her coming home beat up or disappearing. That's just the recipe for a good book.
So many characters, Betty, Chloe, Alessandra, Rachel... So many to choose from for the next installments. I can't wait for Chloe to either fall for someone new or end up back with Josef. Their bickering is hilarious to me.
Okay... I think I've gushed enough. Love Shelly Laurenston. If I can get my one project set up for a TV series, I'm all over this one next, if possible.

What I liked
Shelly Laurenston is one of my favourite authors. The worlds are bizarre, the characters are larger than life and the dialogue always makes me laugh. These characters are loud, brash and totally in your face; I adore them.
So, what do I like about this book? I love the world; it's brilliantly imagined. The series focuses on a world where Viking God's run rife and they gift a second chance of life to those who want to serve them and put them into clans. The two clans that are focused on this are the Crows and the Protectors which is where our Romeo and Juliet situation arises (well, without the poison and suicide).
The Crows are loud, brash and totally unpredictable. Jace is an exception to the rule because, as a complete introvert, she mostly hates everyone in her clan except the dogs. They are too loud, too nosy and they seem hell-bent on making her socialise with people. In fact, Jace struggles with most people apart from the Protectors. It is with these Protectors that she finds Ski and their romance begins. The Protectors were hilarious. So stoic, so totally anal about the books .. I just laughed from start to finish.
What else did I enjoy about this book? The characters; all the characters. Jace is one of my favourite heroines from all the Laurenston books. She is so blunt that all of her dialogue had me snickering or straight up laughing out loud. Ski's determination to find out how to talk to Jace was adorable. He was so different to the type of hero that I am used to from Laurenston that it was both a novelty and a pleasure. Their romance was funny, cute as hell and actually quite heart-warming.
Also, massive shout out the cat. I loved the cat.
What I didn’t like
There were a few characters that were just thrown in there for no reason other than to make a crazy statement or be annoying as hell. I enjoyed the dialogue but they felt pointless and didn't really drive the story forwards.
