Mary Roach lends her unique wit and vigorous research to all the unseen and frankly unimaginable
effort that goes into equipping soldiers.
From clothing to armour, it is a fascinating trip.
I’m never really disappointed by Mary Roach; her writing is always fun to read. The topic of this one was my least favorite so far but still a 4-star read.
Catching up on really old titles. I'm very sorry I didn't get a chance to read it before it expired. Thanks for approving my request.
Roach is like the gleeful Pied Piper, leading the reader through a land of bodily emissions and dismemberments. This book seemed a little less on point than previous books. She is still the funniest non-fiction writer.
Mary Roach never disappoints! Although Stiff remains my favorite, Roach's head-first approach to any of her subjects will ensure that I buy each and every one of them. Always fascinating; always educational.
I've been a fan of Mary Roach since I first read Stiff. So, I had high hopes for Grunt - unfortunately, I was not as enamored of this one as her prior books. It just failed to catch my interest. I can see where some - particularly military buffs - would potentially enjoy it. However, this one left me struggling to finish.
In Grunt Roach again demonstrates her ability to clearly explain the nooks and crannies of science we are all vaguely aware must exist, but rarely think about. We know that modern technological advances keep our soldiers safer and reduce casualties, but Roach divulges her in-depth research with self-deprecating humor which keeps the reader hanging on (even wishing they could be Roach) even while our stomachs are churning from her detailed descriptions.
Honestly not as good as her other ones. Some articles are more interesting than others, as usual. Unfortunately I didn't skip the ones that didn't interest me! My bad. https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/1752503424?book_show_action=false&from_review_page=1
I'm a Mary Roach fan- she takes an angle on a subject and delivers her research in a humorous but very informative way.

You really can't go wrong with Mary Roach! This wasn't my favorite of hers, but it's still pretty darn good and packed with interesting and funny facts and commentary. For a book about war, it doesn't feel too "heavy"--except for the last chapter.
Interesting work on all aspects of war and the military. Another good one by Mary Roach.
I've read and loved every Mary Roach book so far. Grunt gets into the nitty-gritty of war that you'd never think of - from the way clothes are designer to the vehicles. And what's even more amazing is how Roach infuses these serious topics with humor and warmth. Her books are a perfect blend of informativeness and fun.
