Neva Shilling is going to be tested much. To realize that you are a widow suddenly? Take it back - that maybe she is not even a widow, but an unmarried woman with 2 children? And more - that her dead "husband" sent her his 3 children from another "marriage" to take care of? And could you even do this?
And don't forget - this is set in a small city with all of its judgmental mentality...
Very attractive sounding plot! And I applaud Ms Sawyer for going onto the riskier topics. She can also create a safe space for her readers, so even a slowly-going plot is easy on my eyes and I have got into its smoothly running pace easily.
Yet - I would love for the authoress to go even deeper. While Ms Sawyer is not shallow and she is addressing some very realistic and hard issues, I believe that she is also somehow stopping her characters from feeling (and thus addressing) the dark desperations (this is better addressed in Jesse's character, but Neva is too angelic to truly behave ugly - but even if one can behave well with God's help, what about the hidden anger or pride?). But this might be only me, because I like to go into the very depths of souls in my readings.
The novel is also seriously prolonged - and it is testament to the authoress's skills that I not got bored. The slower pace here is quite soothing.
Having said all that - Ms Sawyer is a good writer and her topics are authentic. Good for her and good for us readers!
This book was very good. It was not your typical happy to lucky romance novel. The characters dealt with betrayal, sorrow, grief, love, loyalty, pride. It will definitely stir up your emotions.
A great story that kept me intrigued from the first word till the very last page.
Thanks for letting me review it! My students like this author.
