Ever so cute! Absolutely adorable! Follow along in Toto's footsteps down the yellow brick road!
Toto is too cute of a little pup. I love how this book incorporates his wish of wanting to be able to speak aloud, just like anyone and anything else in the Land of Oz. His wish is just as important as what everyone else wants to ask of the great Wizard of Oz.
The story is inspired more by the book than the movie perhaps, as shown in certain details like the silver shoes, instead of ruby shoes. I enjoyed this just fine. Plus, I really feel like the author dedicated time in trying to match the original writing style of L. Frank Baum to give this one an authentic feel.
Overall, a cute Oz story for a new generation!
I've seen the Wizard of Oz and it was ok, for me I didn't fall in love with the story till I saw The Wiz. Man I love that movie and still watch it to this day. The live action version was amazing and I could go on and on about it. And with that love I went into Wicked thinking it was just going to be a fun way to kill a couple of hours, and um...I fell down the rabbit hole again. I love Wicked. I've seen it in two different countries in different languages and I love, love, love it.
With that said I went into this book thinking I was in for a fun ride and while it was a quick and light read it was just an exact retelling of the Wizard of Oz just from Toto's point of view. Nothing new was added to the story. No different route taken, no deviation to be had. Just an exact retelling of the tale.
The Wizard of Oz in is public domain so its up for grabs. There's no police that will come banging down your door if you use the bare bones of the tale and add in your own plot and characters.
This was a total letdown, and if I'm not mistaken if Patience wanted to stick so closely to the original tale Toto could speak. So why all the wasted page space with him yearning to talk like all the other animals? That could have solved a lot of things and I think it would have added in that extra something that this story was lacking.
3 stars for the nostalgia factor
Usually when people write retellings or reimaginings of well-known stories they either set the story in the same world, but write about a completely new character or flesh out a secondary character who doesn't have much backstory, or they just use the bare-bones plot and themes and write totally outside any basis on canon. This story was none of these.
The story was very much scene for scene, action for action the original Wizard of Oz book. So first of all how imaginative is that? I could sit down and write the original story from the Tin Man's, Scarecrow's, or Lion's POV in very little time. The only difference was she gave Dorothy a tiny two or three paragraph backstory, pre Auntie Em and Uncle Henry, and gave the Scarecrow a proper name and the Lion a proper name.
The major theme of this book was Toto's desperate want to be able to talk like all.the other beasts in Oz. Well, in book eight, Tic-Tok of Oz, it is revealed that Toto was able to talk as soon as he landed in Oz, he just didn't want to. So the audience for this book is reduced to people who will only be reading this story alone and none of the other Oz books, including The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.
I was going to recommend this book as a children's alternative to the original story because it is the same, but with much less violence. However, I feel the Toto deviation ruins it for that purpose, and also the writing was on the bland side.
Thank you Netgalley for the review copy
This was a lovely story which adds detail to the classic Wizard of Oz. Having the opinion of Toto really adds humour and I came away smiling 😃
My son, a huge Oz fan, ADORED this book. We read it twice via Netgalley, then bought the ebook so he can continue reading it whenever he wants. He loved seeing the story through Toto's eyes, and it inspired him to think about how the story would change through other characters' perspectives.
Really liked this book. Liked the characters and story flow. Fun perspective on classic story. Entertaining read. Always fun reading different views on a story that you think you know. Inventive idea. Good to read with kids. Would recommend. Voluntarily review from ARC from NetGalley.
Great story-telling on the Wizard of Oz through Toto's vision. It's a re-telling that gives a different perspective to the well-known tale.
I love the vintage feel to this book. I am very interested in anything Oz related, I've probably read or own every retelling out there. When I saw there was a book about Toto, I had to read it! I loved reading a familiar story about a familiar place but from a totally different perspective. I feel this is a very new and different concept!
Loved this! Very original idea, a quick pacing that moves the story along and great characters.
This is a delightfully written tale exploring L. Frank Baum's famous story of the Wizard of Oz, but this time told through the eye's of Dorothy's faithful dog Toto.
Narrating the tale throughout, Toto provides a unique perspective on the well-known adventure, frustrated by his inability to talk like the other characters but clearly with plenty to say!
The action stays true to the original storyline, although we also discover how Dorothy came to be living with Aunt Em and Uncle Henry and how Toto became part of the family back in Kansas.
A wonderful book for all ages!
