This is the third book by Robert Whitlow that I've read. The first two were well balanced with action and legal drama. These other books showed that Robert Whitlow can deftly tell a good story while exploring subjects of racism and faith. The Witnesses does not live up to the other two books. Legal drama overwhelmed the action and romance side of the story. He also chose not to deal with the topic of racism at all even though his book flashes back to Nazi Germany and the crimes being committed during that time. The final problem I had with the book is that he chose to have a protagonist who is a self-avowed witness if not a cause for war crimes being committed. I found myself unable to celebrate his unearned redemption. I mean unearned story-wise, not unearned in a spiritual way. The story never gave any sense of a climb from the depths of desperation to his changed life. It just happened one day while he listened to a sermon in a church. I was disappointed by this book.

Both Parker House and his grandfather see the glimpses of the future. And now it is time for his grandfather to face his past.

Not for me - even if I can value the parts of this novel (like Layla´s quick wit and Franz Haus´s humble wisdom and independence and agility) - yet this was too slow read. I like gentle reads, but not with the combination we have on the table: pasts from the history (and Nazi Germany´s pasts truly do not belong amongst the peaceful ones) and the courtroom and the legal battles and twists. I was expecting faster plot and the secrets and dangers that are running much deeper. Also Layla´s healing feels quite rushed.
Maybe next time? Because the wisdom is here - just add some energy for me!
