House of Cards it ain’t

The blurb from the publisher cites that one of the key selling points of this novel is that it is a political mystery with multiple plot lines, and yes, it may have multiple plot lines but that is one of the reasons for the low score. The plot lines seem random and don’t serve any purpose other than to confuse the reader - and trust me, I am not easily confused.

I am an avid fan of House of Cards and find the various plot lines well written and plausible but Damage Control falls far short of the mark. I also found the main character, Josie Kendall, badly fleshed out and extremely annoying. Her often brash behaviour as she navigates the bastions of Washington politics is as far as you could get from what I would think would be appropriate.

She has no respect for the law, lies to her husband and the police and is generally far too big for her boots. This annoyance was carried to the very end of the novel and at times I forced myself to turn the pages. Not ever a good sign.

I won’t be reading any more Josie Kendall mysteries, that is for sure. Having watched Scandal and seeing what is really meant by damage control in a political arena, this novel did not live up to the hype.
